Javier Serna Obituary

Javier S. Serna

October 10, 1953 - April 12, 2025

Javier S. Serna, 71, a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, died peacefully in the company of family after a battle with cancer on April 12, 2025. Born on October 10, 1953, in Monterrey, Mexico, he left a legacy of kindness and generosity. Whether through work, ministry or friendships, Javier made a memorable impact.

In 1972, he graduated from East Chicago Washington, where he played football and baseball. He was the first in his extended family to get a college degree. He earned a business degree from Indiana University in 1976 before starting a 34-year career at FDIC. He became assistant regional director in Chicago and received recognition from the President's Council on Y2K.

Javier dedicated his life to God as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1984. He served the congregation as an elder and full-time volunteer minister.

Upon his retirement at age 55, he moved from Palatine, Ill., to Trafalgar, Ind., and later South Haven, Mich.

Javier loved spending time with family in the North Woods of Wisconsin. He had a knack for catching the big one.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Renette, his sons Javier Jr. (Sue), Arthur, and daughter Maren Swhear (Bryan), his brother Juan, sisters Hilda (Paul), Alicia (Edgar) and Rita, nieces, nephews and friends who were like family. He was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Hilda Serna and brother Arthur.

Javier's loving spirit will be carried forward in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
