Joachim Paul "Joe" Maar, 82, of Valparaiso, formerly of Hammond, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Born on July 8, 1942, in Hanover-Münden, Germany, to Wilhelm and Augusta Maar, Joe embarked on an extraordinary journey of determination and resilience when, at age 20, he emigrated to the United States with little more than hope and courage. Despite arriving without knowledge of the English language, he quickly set to work building a new life.
Joe began his career at Commercial Wallpaper in Hammond trained as an engraver where he worked for 35 years. His unwavering work ethic, sharp craftsmanship, and kindhearted nature earned him the respect and affection of everyone he encountered. Over the years, he not only mastered his craft but also the English language, all while preserving his quick wit and unshakable optimism.
Joe had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome-whether through his lighthearted, corny jokes or the dog biscuits he kept on hand to charm neighborhood pets. His dedication extended to every aspect of his life, from his meticulous care of his yard to the cherished time spent with family. Among the many traditions he held dear, the annual assembly-line preparation of German rouladen for Christmas dinners became a symbol of the love and laughter that defined his home. Later in life, Joe often spoke fondly of a memorable trip to Alaska he and Ginny took with close friends celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, highlight of his retirement.
On August 20, 1966, Joe married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny" Gruendel. Their nearly 50 years of marriage were filled with love, partnership, and countless memories. Ginny preceded him in death in 2015. Together, they built a family that was his greatest source of pride. Joe is survived by their children: Monica (Dan) Ball of Kouts, William (Erica) Maar of Valparaiso, and David (Monica) Maar of Hebron; grandchildren: Matthew (Krystan), Rebecca, Tyler (Lauren), Megan (Josh), Andrew (Katie), Annaliese (Jack), Rianna, Lincoln, and Brooklyn; and great-grandchildren: Joelle, Raymond, Aleki, and Jensen. He is also remembered fondly by numerous extended family members and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his siblings: Elfriede, Elisabeth "Susie", Kaethe, Karl, Heinrich & Dorothea "Tia".
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 7, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso, with a funeral service beginning at 4:00 p.m., officiated by Reverend Stan Temme. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heritage Lutheran Church or the VNA (Visiting Nurses Association).
Joe's legacy of kindness, humor, and unwavering devotion to family and friends will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. His life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and the joy of simple, meaningful moments. You might have met him as a stranger but you always left as a friend.

Monica, Bill, David, and Family I am fortunate to have known both Joe and Ginny, the Gruendels, and all of you! I moved from California to Hammond in 1986 to marry Warren Ohr. I was welcomed by all of you at Trinity Church. Both of your parents and your grandparents were special, blessed people. They were always so friendly and did so much for our church. Joe was very talented - he beautifully finished a very old telephone table for me. My condolences are with you.

My sincere condolences, as Jo was always telling jokes and was so nice to me. I worked with him at Commercial Wallpaper, but moved to TX with work for almost 25 years before returning to NWI in 2023. I still have the little wooden sleigh he made me for Christmas and we display it every year.
