Joseph Tyrrell Obituary

DR. JOSEPH JAMES TYRRELL Dr. Joseph James Tyrrell, born to Thomas Carroll Tyrrell and Mary Bridget Kelly Tyrrell on March 28, 1926 in Muncie, Indiana passed away April 25, 2009. He is survived by his loving friend, Rosemary Block; his nine children (with deceased wife Katie Heffernan Tyrrell): Bridget (Kent) Walsh, Virginia (Ron) Railson , Kathleen, Father Joe (St Patrick's Cathedral NY), Mary Jo (Rick) Kucera, Marguerite, Sallie (Ricky) Surman, Dan, and Neal (Carolyn Keiper); brother, Bill (Ruth) Tyrrell; brother and sisters -in- law: Dan (Betty) Heffernan, Mary Ellen McFarlin and Dorothy Heffernan; seven grand children and countless nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas C. (Sallie) Tyrrell, and sisters: Virginia (Bill) Church and Mary Alice (Vince) Mogle. Dr. Joe, as most called him, touched many a life in his 53 years as a practicing physician. Having completed his Bachelor of Science Degree at Ball State University (where he also played varsity football) he followed in the footsteps of his oldest brother Tom and embarked on a life of serving people through the practice of medicine. He headed to the big city of Chicago to complete his medical training at Loyola University, internship at Cook County and then served his country at the Naval Base in Oakland California during the Korean War. After returning to Chicago he completed his surgical residency at the West Side VA in Chicago. Dr. Joe joined his brother and sister in law Drs. Tom and Sallie Tyrrell at the Tyrrell Clinic in Calumet City. Although he trained as a surgeon, physicians did it all back then, from delivering babies, treating colds, casting fractures, removing hot gall bladders to making house calls and caring for the elderly in their final days. He always had his doctor bag in his car ready to go. Many a family remembers him boiling his glass syringes and needles on the stove for the obligatory 12 minutes prior to administering medicine to a sick patient at home. He had a most remarkable and caring bed side manner. He was the sports team doctor for TF North, Chief of Surgery at St Margaret's Hospital, served on staff at Our Lady of Mercy, headed the breast cancer awareness screening program on the south side and was a member of the Lake County Medical Society and served on countless committees. Remarkably he continued to practice medicine right through his 80th birthday. Somehow he found the time to be a loving husband and devoted dad to nine children. Wednesdays were his day off (at least after rounds and emergency surgeries) and he always spent them with his family. Dr. Joe commonly loaded his children, and usually half of the neighborhood, into the car for an afternoon at the nature center, the dunes, a museum or for a weekend get a way camping trip or long bike trips (he was an avid cyclist). He loved to travel, ski, golf, play bridge and dance but most of all he loved to read and ride his bike. . He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Whiting American Lesion Post 80 and was a great supporter of Catholic Education as well as many other charitable organizations. The viewing will be held at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. (next to Fitness Pointe) Munster, IN 46321 (219)924-3333 on Sunday April 26, 2009 4:00pm to 7:00 pm and Monday April 27, 2009 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will follow Tuesday morning at 10:00am. at Saint Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Dr, Dyer, IN 46311. He will be laid to rest at St. John - St. Joseph Cemetery Hammond, IN at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of the Calumet Area, Riley Hospice Residence, American Cancer Society, or Catholic Charities. www.kishfuneralhome.net

Dear Bridget, Virginia, Kathleen, Joseph, Mary Jo, Margie, Sallie, Danny, and Neal, et al., -

Through the kindness of Fr. Rees Doughty in NY, I learned of the passing of your father into the loving hands of God.

It has been many years since I have seen all of you but your father and mother's kindness and all of your hospitality has remained with me from our trips to Chicago, Seattle, Biloxi etc.,

I was always grateful for your hospitality through the years. I regret I was not able to be with you at this time of loss.

May your father (and Mother's) example remain for us a source of inspiration and consolation.

Best to All -

Paul and Suzanne DiIulio (Laura, Anne, Joseph, and John)

I remember Dr. Tyrrell's soft and gentle nature. He was such a kind and giving man. I'll always remember the many, many days and nights spent at the Tyrrell's house swimming in their pool and eating Hostess cup cakes. He provided so much to those around him, most importantly the example of how never to forget the needs of others. The whole Tyrrell clan was amazing in that way. Thanks for all the great memories. Much love and gratitude,

Dear Bridget, Virginia, Kathleen, Joey, Mary Jo, Margie, Sallie, Danny, and Neal,

I am so sad for all of you! I have so many fond memories of your dad. Mostly, he was always so calm! He loved reading the bible to you guys at night, and having long conversations where he could pick your brain and listen, listen, listen. He was always so proud of each and every one of you. For all the times I spent with your family on Ellis, and for all the times I stayed with you when your parents were gone, I got a pretty good up-close look at your family. The one thing that always stands out is how much your parents respected and loved each other. No one can ever take away the positive impact that had on you!
How very blessed we all are, to have shared life with him. I will miss him!
Love, Mary McSherry-Smith

How blessed we have been through the years to enjoy this wonderful man and all of his children. Your parents made great friends to my parents, and they provided so many laughs. We have great memories of Ellis Ave, Walloon Lake, and even recent celebrations. We are keeping you close in our prayers! (PS: Check out the picture I uploaded of our parents with the Dillons!)

Here is a cute remembrance!

MJ and Family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort in seeing your father in each other and in the telling and retelling of family stories as we do at my house.
God bless.

April 27, 2009

I only know to identify myself as the babysitter/mom's helper when I was in High School that told Magic Kitty stories. Your dad was such a positve role model in my life. When he walked me home from your house he was always solicitous of my opinions and talked to me as if I were an adult. Your generous parents paid me more than the "going rate" in South Holland and attended my wedding. Your dad was always ready to listen to you after he would come home from what was probably a draining day of work and showed so much concern for you mom, especially when she was pregant (which was most of the time when I was there.) I didn't know the last two children, Dan and Neal, but I think often and fondly of your parents as well as Bridget, Kathleen, Joey, Mary Jo, Marguerite and Baby Sallie. I hope you are comforted by the fact that your parents both reached out to so many including the sick. I also remember when I came over one day to find a picture of a child from another country on you refrigerator that your parents were sending money to and how you explained that the boy in the picture didn't have a nice life because he was poor. I know you will carry on all that both your parents stood for. Marianne Rollins O'Donnell RN, MJ

Dear Virginia and Bridget: I was sorry to learn of your dad's passing but of course you may take solace in knowing that your parents are now reunited. And look what a legacy they bequeathed the world with their nine children! May God comfort and strengthen your family at this time, and know that your old friends at Loyola U. have not forgotten you. Sincerely, Bruce Lespinasse

Our thoughts are with you today and always. Dr. Tyrrell took care of all of us as youngsters (eight kids). He couldn't always tell us apart, but he always had such a wise and friendly manner that none of us ever had fears of going to see the doctor. Later, as my mother became ill he also assisted us with her care. Surely a loving and caring man such as he will be greatly missed.
