Mary Carter Obituary

Dr. Mary Ann Carmody Carter

April 15, 1945 - Sept. 10, 2023

VALPARAISO, IN - Dr. Mary Ann Carmody Carter, age 78, went to be with our Lord on September 10, 2023 after suffering a heart attack at her home.

Mary Ann was born in Gary, IN to Raymond Carmody Sr., MD and Marianne Carmody. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Timothy Carmody, MD, and sister Kathleen Miller of Chesterton, IN. Mary Ann was a widow, but is survived by one daughter, Shelly Brower of Stevenson Ranch, CA, brother Raymond Carmody, MD, (Carol) of Tucson, AZ, sisters Maureen Carmody (Danny) of Seminole, FL, Nancy Carmody of Valparaiso, IN, and Theresa Carmody (Don) of Valparaiso, IN. She was a cherished mother-in-law to Vance Brower and loving grandmother to Ian & Cade Brower of Stevenson Ranch, CA. Mary Ann was so proud of her daughter and grandchildren.

Mary Ann attended Chesterton High School and St. Joseph's College. She was widowed at a young age, but went on to receive her teaching degree and master's degree after attending Valparaiso University. Mary Ann taught briefly but felt her true calling was becoming a therapist. She proudly earned her PhD from the Union Institute and University in 1995 and fulfilled her dream of becoming a Christian Counselor. She was an extremely compassionate therapist. Her main goal was to provide quality care and an understanding and caring space for others. She enjoyed reading the Bible and praying alone and with others.

Mary Ann loved nature and walked every day in either Dunes State Park or Lakewood Park. Communing with nature was Mary Ann's own form of therapy. She loved all animals and was known for her fondness of birds, especially cardinals. She owned many dogs, cats, and horses throughout her life. Horseback riding was a passion of her early years. She was also known for feeding strays that wandered into her yard.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and clients.

Per Mary Ann's wishes, there will not be a funeral, but instead a mass will be held in her honor.

Mary Ann was my therapist, mentor, and prayer partner for almost 25 years. She was so filled with the Holy Spirit. She loved unconditionally, prayed ferociously and was ever faithful. She lead me in my journey through many dark times and I am so grateful that God brought us together.
It gives me peace knowing that she is now with so many of the ones she loves the most I am looking forward to seeing her again.

I am so saddened to hear this. She helped our family in so many ways. I regularly would see her at Roger's Lakewood Park and she always greeted me with fondness, love and prayers. What a beautiful soul. She will be missed in so many ways but her faith in God has her in a better place.

I have many fond memories of working with Mary Ann in the office. She was always pleasant and good natured, including when our "behind the scenes" office routine included caring for two young rascals, her nephews Timmy and Danny. She was a devoted friend to Annie and John, and to Ruth, with whom she enjoyed Porter Beach every Wednesday afternoon. She was able to turn her own grief into compassion and caring for others. My condolences to all in the family. Rest in peace, Mary Ann.
