Nick & I were friends from early childhood till Nick's passing.
Nick was an outstanding athlete being selected Chicago HS All City Fullback by the Chicago Tribune after Bowen HS Blue Division City Championship 1963. During the 1964 Football Season Nick suffered a severe leg fracture that ended his playing days and any of the football scholarships that were previously awarded to Nick. After graduation Nick attended University of Evansville and then a very long and successful career with IBM from internal operations onward to International Sales Operations.
Nick was able to retire at an early age and settled in North Carolina, then to Carmel, Indiana to be close to his grandsons living there and in Suburban Chicago.
Nick and I and our wives visited and we kept in contact all through the years along with Angelo Loukas and his wife.
When Nick told me of his diagnosis of glioblastoma, it set me back horribly. Nick was the strongest constitutional guy I have known. He never feared the dark outcome and for many years proved the prediction of the cancer specialists wrong. When first told he had 6 months after diagnosis, Nick stretched this number to more than 62 months. I spoke with Nick every month to get him laughing and reminiscing, whether it be sports or politics or general happenings. I looked forward to our talks as did Nick. I believe the laughter kept Nick going beyond the expectancy of this terrible cancer. Nick Lemai h was a Mans Man and went out like a Man. God Bless my lifelong friend.
