Norman Wesley Stavem
CROWN POINT, IN - Norman Wesley Stavem, age 89, of Crown Point, IN, formerly of Hobart, IN, passed away on July 11, 2024. He was born and raised in Gary, IN, to Olaf and Dorothy Mae Stavem.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Dale. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Stavem Keilman; and his loving nieces, Deborah (Brian) Dawson, Cynthia (Karry) Speichert, and Sherry (Scott) Praxl. He is also survived by his six great-nieces and several great-great nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Emerson High School in 1953, Norman enlisted in the Army Reserve and attended Purdue University Calumet Center. He later became a draftsman and spent his entire career working for United States Steel - Gary Works. He enjoyed bowling throughout his life, from setting pins at the local alleys during his teens, participating in leagues and tournaments as an adult, to more recently joining the Rolling Thunders bowling league at St. Anthony Majestic Care home.
Norman spent the majority of his years in service to others through membership in fraternal organizations. He was a 57-year member of the Gary Masonic Lodge No. 677 where he spent countless hours volunteering and holding many officer positions including Worshipful Master in 1975. He held membership in the Knights of the York Cross of Honour. For many years, Norman could be found volunteering at the Masonic corn roast booth at the Lake County Fair.
As a 37-year member of Orak
Shriners Hospital, Norman was in the Transportation Unit that provided families pickup and delivery service to and from
Shriners Hospital for Children in Michigan City, IN. He was a Color Guard member where he proudly carried the flag in many rituals and summer parades, and he could be found during the months of May and June selling vidalia onions on the Crown Point Square.
Norman was an Honorary Member for Life of the DeMolay Legion of Honor. While the hours he spent in fraternal life and charitable service were countless and honorable, Uncle Norm will be missed more for his quirky humor and for never missing the special moments in his nieces' lives.
Private interment at Calumet Park Cemetery will be held.
