Phyllis, a Hammond High School Graduate, was a vivacious, hard working young woman. Her work career started at Sinclair as a mail clerk who worked her way up to an executive secretary, but more importantly, met the love of her life, John Hudec. She then took a job with a brain surgeon, Dr. Westhasen, as his secretary. As a great mom and wife, she also worked and supported John in their self-employed businesses of gas stations and various truck rental businesses.
As if her work and parenting wasn't enough, Phyllis was very passionate about her hobbies and interests. She was a member of a saddle club that would take annual trips to Brown County to ride trails and enjoy fellowship and group camping. She used her membership as a garden club member to make the homestead beautiful. Phyllis enjoyed golfing, bowling and found hobbies for her evenings by playing pinochle or avid reading. Evenings out to attend theatre performances or movies with friends and family were another enjoyment of hers.
Above all, Phyllis' favorite thing to do was anything with her family. She enjoyed attending the grandkids' activities, playing Shanghai Gin, and other games. Lifelong family traveling like going to Iowa to visit/work with a family on the farm that became an annual fun tradition; joining her husband delivering materials nationwide for their son's business, while seeing many attractions along the way. Also, many camping trips with their 5th wheel camper with children and grandchildren or just the two of them. The highlight of their travels being a trip covering Australia, Fiji and New Zealand.
Phyllis also was very involved in giving. She was tremendously dedicated as an elder at Dyer Presbyterian Church. Phyllis always had a special place in her heart for "Meals on Wheels" for which she volunteered for over 30 years, initially with her husband and then on her own after his passing.
Phyllis will be missed but not forgotten. Memories will always hold a place in the heart of the people who knew her.
