1927 - 2018

Robert "Bob" Lee Surman, Sr. HEBRON, IN - Robert "Bob" Lee Surman, Sr., 91, of Hebron passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018 at home with his family. He was born June 29, 1927 in Gary, IN to Carl and Lillian (Smith) Surman and graduated from Horace Mann High School. Bob began his career with Bethlehem Steel in 1964 and retired as a Millwright in Mechanical Maintenance in 1999. As a proud union retiree, he enjoyed the Local #6787 travel group gatherings with Helen to various destinations. On December 13, 1948 he married Helen George. He was a pillar of strength with unwavering love and commitment to his wife of 70 years and four loving children. Through their hard work, together they built a wonderful life from humble beginnings. Losing Bob/Dad will leave a void only to be filled by all the wonderful memories he left with us. He was a proud member of Saint Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church and loved to participate in church activities with a strong devotion to Christ. He was a fan of Chicago sports teams and boxing, but he loved the Blackhawks, never missing a telecast. Bob touched all those whom he met leaving a lasting impression from his compassion, kindness, and well placed sense of humor. We will love and miss you Bob/Dad, from your wife and family. May he be remembered forever. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Helen; children: Virginia Alvarez and Ricky Surman;son-in-law; Dennis Knopic, grandchildren: Robert Alvarez (Dawn), Stephanie Knopic and Margaret Knopic, great-grandchildren, Jessica Alvarez, Dustin Williams, Gabriel Knopic; and many loving niecesand nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Robert L. Surman, II, daughter, Linda Surman-Knopic, brother, Carl Surman, and sister, Grace Bullock. A visitation will be held Thursday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at MOELLER FUNERAL HOME, VALPARAISO with Trisagion service beginning at 5:30 p.m. The funeral will begin Friday, 10:00 a.m. directly at St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church, 36 W. 700 N., Valparaiso, Rev. Father James L. Greanias officiating with burial following at Calumet Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Saint Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church.
