I was a proud student of Dr. Austensen for several different classes during my undergraduate years at Illinos State University in Normal.
I sought the classes he instructed because of his humanity and expertise. Dr. Austensen connected with me on differing levels from Led Zepplin music to European Diplomatic History to Schloss Johanesborg Cabernet wines.
He was a Renaissance man, one of the few true examples I have ever yet had the great fortune to know.
I am truly saddened by his passing. Dr. Austensen was the finest university professor I have known, both inside of the classroom and in my life.
May God's blessings be upon him and his family.

To my dearest husband, best and most trusted friend, loving father of our children...I miss you. Fifty years went by too quickly. June 18, 2017 would have been our 51st year of marriage...thank you for all the wonderful memories. Your Wife, Anne

i knew Roy from the Saturday Evening Club. He was ever the teacher, very modest, an instrument of the Lord in daily life. He will be missed by me and all he knew or was touched bu.

Sending sincere condolences to the Austensen family and to Roy's many friends and colleagues at VU. I recall with much appreciation Roy's support and good counsel, especially in the early years of my music department chairmanship when we were moving into the VUCA, and when music staffing was in flux. On one occasion in the move-in summer of 1995, I was trying out one of the new pianos on the Duesenberg stage, playing one of the few pieces I still knew from memory. It was by Grieg, and Roy happened to wander inI was very pleased to have been playing a Norwegian piece at that moment. Throughout his entire time as Provost, I always appreciated that he had knowledge and understanding of the distinctive place of music at the institution. He was a wonderful leader and citizen of the VU community.

Roy hired me at Valpo some years ago now, then taught with me in the first year Core most recently, since leaving the Provost's office. A beloved teacher and colleague. I will never forget how he spoke of the autonomy and flexibility we enjoy as faculty members as the freedom to decide which 80 hours / week we choose to work! Dear Anne: May God hold you and yours in his loving arms, and give you peace.

Roy and I were classmates since we were both 5 years old. So sad to hear of the passing of a dear friend ever since 1947.

It was a sad day when I learned of the passing of Roy Austensen. Roy and I had the good fortune to work together during his time at Illinoist State University. He was a wonderful colleague who also was highly regarded as a teacher and scholar. In spite of his extraordinary commitment to higher education, he found time for his family, church, and community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

So sorry to hear about Roy passing. I had the honor of working with this man for a number of years. I appreciated his high moral character, hard work, and wit. He loved Valparaiso University and tried to do what was best for them. Roy was truly a "class act."
