Samuel Gershman Obituary
Samuel Robert Gershman, passed away November 21, 2012 on his 72nd birthday surrounded by his loving and devoted family after a courageous battle with cancer. A true man about town, Sam had many friends from the front table at the Pancake House to members of the 1150 Staff to the Friday Shabbat get-togethers at Walter's. He truly enjoyed living and everyone he met was immediately his friend whether around the corner or across the sea. A graduate of Indiana University, he remained forever a loyal IU basketball fan and Cub's hopeful. He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Harriet (nee Rosenfeld); his cherished children: Pamela (Evan) Bard of Maplewood, NJ, David (Hilary) of Miami, FL, and Jenna (Daniel) Wellner of Oak Park, IL. Proud and devoted Papa Sam to his ten grandchildren: Jacob, Lily and Sophie Bard; Emmet, Leo, Reed and Charlie Gershman; Simon, Nate and the late Benjamin Wellner whose star forever flickered in his heart. Sam was the son of the late William and Ida Gershman, eldest brother to Jerry (Janice) of Indianapolis, IN, Renee (Norman) Gordon and Ronald (Toni) of Munster, IN; uncle to many nieces and nephews whose love showed these past few months. Sam was the owner of Hammond Drapery Company for over 40 years, Chicagoland Drapery for 15 years, past president of the Hammond Kiwanis Club, board member of the Lake Shore Synagogue, Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago, Beth Israel Synagogue of Hammond, IN, and many other charitable organizations. He always had time for others. A special thank you to JoJo for his devotion this past year. Services will be held at Oak Park Temple, 1235 North Harlem, Oak Park, IL followed by burial at Westlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Sam's memory to Lake Shore Synagogue, 70 East Elm, Chicago, IL 60611, Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago, 4433 West Touhy Ave., Lincolnwood, IL 60712 or Cubs Care, 1060 West Addison St., Chicago, IL 60613. Dear Harriet,
I will always have very fond memories of Sam and his smile, sense of humor and friendliness. What fun we had planning the "my heart is full" dinner back all those years ago.
