Steven Toth Obituary

Steven Patrick "Steve" Toth

Mar 17, 1936 - Mar 5, 2025

Steven Patrick Toth, 88, of Hobart, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on March 5, 2025. Steve was born on March 17, 1936, in East Chicago, Indiana to Steven and Josephine Toth. He was brother to Margaret Toth (Machuca). Steve was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and attended Dartmouth College. He also played football at Dartmouth and was a member of the sphinx. Steve returned to East Chicago and married Mary Barbara Karvelis, also of East Chicago, and quickly started a family. He served in the US Army and upon discharge attended Indiana University Bloomington where he earned his master's degree in education. Steve was a diligent and dedicated teacher of US History and Social Studies at East Chicago Roosevelt for 39 years. It brought him happiness to meet up with former students who often shared their gratitude for being such a great teacher.

Steve enjoyed the simple things in life: spending time with family and friends, tennis, golf, traveling, workouts at the YMCA, and especially reading, often devouring two or more books a week. He was a long-suffering Cubs and Bears fan, sticking with his teams through thick and thin. Steve was a faithful man and an active member in the Catholic Church, serving as lector for many years at St. Bridget's Church in Hobart. He was a loving and devoted husband to Mary for 65 years. He was a strong but sweet father to his children, Jeanne Paxton (Sam), Michael Toth (Lisa), and David Toth (Julie). A warm and loving grandpa to Emma, Maggie, Becca, Alex, Sydney, Caroline, and Will, and great-grandfather to Celine. He will be missed greatly by all for his wonderful example of an earnest, peaceful man, finding joy in the everyday things in life. 'Yozee dotes potates!' was a favorite exclamation.

A special thank you to all of the caregivers that helped him and the family through his final days.

I had Mr. Tooth for 8th grade Civics. He kept us interested and actually taught us what our system means. Too many today don't know or care about what the privledge of the vote or even what a Coup is. We need teachers like him in our schools now. I hope he realized how much he contributed to our school. I had to think back(almost needed a calculator) 1974 Civics, East Chicago Roosevelt Middle/Senior High School. Thank you. Mr. Toth
