Your mother and I were on Community Board 3 together for many years. I was the Chair and she was the First Vice Chair from 1988 to 1990. She was very supportive of me. It wasn't an easy job as you can well imagine.

What I would have said on Thursday is that she was one of the sweetest people I have ever known, but strong and yet calm. I never saw her get angry or say a cross word. We were friends. Once I brought my daughter to her home and I remember the bird. My daughter had so much fun with the bird.

I also remember the family reunions you all had. They sounded like so much fun, well organized, the best I had ever heard about.

One day I remember in particular was the day that Nelson Mandela came to New York for the first time after he had been released from prison. Each Community Board Chair was given one seat at City Hall. Lorraine wanted to go, and we were able to get her a seat too. So we spent a great afternoon together witnessing history. It was amazing.

Passing is always sad, and especially sad how sick your mother was in the end. However, she had a great life. My mother once told me that we live lives that only 5% of the world's population gets to live. That was certainly true of your mother.

Someone once said that what she wanted on her tombstone was, "She was a nice person and she helped people". That is what I want on mine. It certainly could go on your mother's. She was an amazing person, and we were all privileged to have known her.
