Adding my voice in tribute to Dr. Rausen, who was my treating doctor in the late 80s, at 7 years old, when I went through a year of chemo and a couple of surgeries for malignant melanoma. I saw Dr. Rausen for checkups until my mid-20s; I'm 40 now. My mom talks about how up until meeting Dr. Rausen, the path for and outcome of my medical situation were uncertain. My parents trusted Dr. Rausen and his medical advice pimmensely, and I am grateful not only for my life but for the shepherding of care, for the trust and hope that Dr. Rausen offered my family during that very rough time. It is so moving to read these testaments to Dr. Rausen's impact on so many lives. I am sending blessings, love, and gratitude to Dr. Rausen's family, on behalf of mine, in his continuing memory.

It has taken us a long time to write about Dr. Rausen. There aren't enough words to describe this medical warrior and compassionate friend. He treated our daughter, Gabrielle, for 7 years. She grew from a child into a young lady and always referred to him as her baby. She is gone now for almost 31 years but we have never forgotten the time and love he showed her & our family throughout her treatment. We always felt we were in the most capable hands possible with Dr. Rausen. May his soul Rest In Peace. He will never be forgotten.

I am deeply saddened today, after finding out that the man who saved my little boy's life, is no longer with us.
In May of 1987 at NYU Hospital, I met Dr. Aaron Rausen. My 2-year old little boy was very sick...and Dr. Rausen diagnosed him with A.L.L.
Dr Rausen was very kind and extremely determined to help my son, despite not being a 'participating physician' with my insurance plan. I was devastated with the news that my son had leukemia and we would have to go to another hospital. However, Dr. Rausen encouraged me, and said,"I'll accept whatever your insurance plan pays me, and when your son graduates college and gets a good job, he can pay me back."
My son, Charlie was part of a study of 100 children. Dr. Rausen treated him for 5 years. He went into remission 2weeks after his diagnosis, and the cancer never came back.
As Charlie approached his 21st birthday, I decided to have a small family celebration at an Italian restaurant. I sent Dr. Rausen an invitation and asked him to be our 'Guest of Honor.'
We were very blessed to have our favorite Doctor with us as we celebrated my son's 21st birthday. It was so good to see Dr. Rausen after all those years. We had a great time together and shared memories of NYU Hospital.
This January 2017, Charlie, after many obstacles, graduated college with his BA. Today, i began reminiscing our conversation back in May of 1987, and I wondered if Dr. Rausen was still practicing medicine. My heart breaks today, to find out of this tremendous loss, we never got to say goodbye or thank you!
You will always be remembered, we love you! God bless you and your family Emylou. And thank you for the opportunity to share our memories of your wonderful husband.

I just happened upon finding out that Dr. Rausen passed away. Dr. Rausen treated my little sister, Joann, at NYU for Ewing's Sarcoma from 1980 until she passed in 1983, along with so many other children. Many of whom he was able to "save". The first time I met him, I was so angry at my parents because he was so cold, rude & curt. However, after seeing him in action with his kids, I totally understood the reasoning behind it. He was our family's strength during Jo's treatments, passing and DID show up to honor her at her funeral. Whenever I have come to know of someone's child suffering from CA, I always fall back to Dr. Rausen. It is a shame he is no longer with us, but I DO KNOW he saved so many lives..and is a true hero.

I am in total shock. I just happened to search for him and saw the awful news. I am choked up. Dr. Rausen was my doctor when I was 12 years old. That was 21 years ago. I had bone cancer. I loved Dr. Rausen. He had a great sense of humor and always had my mother and I laughing. I will never ever forget him.

We will miss Dr. Rausen for ever. He gave us our son back I could never thank him enough for getting my son cancer free. He was a fast talker but always made his point across. In the mist of all the sadness when my son was diagnosed with ALL Dr. Rausen was the 'light' at the end of the tunnel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I feel so sad to find out that Dr. Rausen passed away. My daughter was in treatment with him for 6 years. She not only respected him but she loved and admired him as well. She felt that when she saw him, she would be well. He inspired much trust to her and she had lots of fun with him. No matter how sick she was, he always made her laugh. Believe it or not, a few times he sang and danced for her (sometimes the nurses were very surprised). Dr. Rausen, wherever you are, I want to thank you for having taken care of my daughter. Just as you told me, she had a good quality of life and that is something I own to you. May you rest in peace. -Michaca Family

Dr Rausen's passion, professionalism, and patience were admirable. It was always evident that he truly cared about each and every patient and their families. His dedication to pediatic cancer and pursuing lifesaving treatments is evidenced still today by my sister Mary's survival 30 years ago. She lives each day knowing that Dr. R indeed saved her life. His family can find comfort in his remarkable career and in knowing that he indeed made a difference in many, many lives. Let his memory be your guide to peaceful days ahead.

Dr. R was one of a kind. I would not be here today if it weren't for his expertise and unwavering loyalty. As a 15 year old, newly diagnosed with bone cancer, Dr. R. never treated me like a child. He was always upfront & direct with me about everything. He didn't believe in beating around the bush and I love & respect him for it. Dr. Rausen will forever be a part of me & I truly owe him my life. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Dr. R. All my love.

As the first psychologist and art therapist he hired for Hassenfeld, I had the supreme good fortune of learning from and working with Dr. Rausen. There was no limit to how he cared for and about the children and families who came to him with their hope. The void that is left by his death is surely filled by the incredible number of children and teens whose lives he saved – they are a testament to the art and science of the man and his medicine. My sympathies go out to Dr. Rausen’s family and the larger hematology/oncology family of colleagues and patients.

Nineteen years ago, at the beginning of summer, Dr. Rausen set in motion the treatment that cured our eight year old son, Rob, of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. We were in mortal fear and shock, and coming under Dr. Rausen's care was the best thing that could have happened. We knew immediately that he was brilliant and that he had phenomenal inner strength and resolve. He was direct and real with us, and supremely knowledgeable about and attentive to every aspect of Rob's care. He was kind to us...and that wonderful grin...he had an authority and humanity we trusted and for which we will be forever grateful.
Dr. Rausen was essential in giving Rob his life back. And Rob loves life -- he's passionate about his friends and about music and ideas; he loves to travel... and he's completed two years work towards an MD/PhD.
We were terribly sad to learn of Dr. Rausen's passing. We were never able to thank him enough for all he gave to us -- and to so many more -- and we will miss knowing he's there. We send our deepest sympathy to his beloved family.

When Dr. Rausen took care of me in 1991, he also took care of my whole family. He was a source of wisdom and reassurance for my parents as they navigated my initial illness, my treatment options, and my recovery. We were fortunate to be in Dr. Rausen's care, and I know that his warmth and his humanity live on in the many colleagues and students he inspired.

Aaron Rausen was the "SUPERMAN" for each child he treated. His wisdom and compassion had no fears to fight against the most devasting thing: "A child with cancer". And so many I know survived because of his kind heart and brilliant mind. Rest on the wings of angels Dr.Rausen, you've certainly earned that. Deepest condolences to his wonderful family. A Nurse

Dr. Rausen was wonderful while my son was treated for leukemia from age 2-7 (1976-81). He was available by phone 24/7 including the time my son ran into the kitchen announcing there was a dent in his head. Frazzled mom called Dr. Rausen who assured me it was unlikely but told me to come immed to his office where we learned it was the natural lumpiness of Greg's head. Whew. Another worry assuaged by Dr. Rausen. You couldn't help loving that man.

Dr. Rausen was a rare blend of medical mastery and human compassion. He was truly a special man who combined skill and concern to not only save lives but enrich them. His care and his smile were critical in helping my daughter fight and win her battle with leukemia. He was a special man who made the world a better place. His work will live on in the lives of the many families that he helped. He will never be forgotten and will always be loved. Peter Gumas

I am so so sorry for your loss... Dr. Rausen saved my life and so much more. He treated me like a daughter... I became a doctor because of him. He taught me that every day is a gift and he helped me realize my potential and every day that I work in the hospital I try to be like him... I still remember the way he drove in on his sick leave after back surgery when I was first diagnosed before he even knew who I was... I remember him eating apples from the top to the bottom right through the core... He had the best sense of humor and the biggest heart... He's a legacy, my hero, and he will always be remembered and missed...
