Aaron Wells Obituary

WELLS--Aaron, M.D. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Aaron Wells. Clinical associate professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and the former director of one of the country's first adult methadone clinics -the Adult Substance Abuse Program at NewYorkPresbyterian -he helped countless addicts recover and resume healthy and productive lives. In 1964, Dr. Wells was elected the first national chairman of the Medical Committee for Human Rights, working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to bring medical aid to civil rights workers in the South. As founder of a task force to assist minority students at Cornell University, president of the Empire State Political Action Committee of Black Physicians, and a member of the board of Hale House, he was a leader and humanitarian deeply committed to the needs of the medically and politically underserved. An accomplished research scientist, he contributed to our understanding of opiate dependency. A thoughtful and erudite teacher, researcher, administrator, community activist and clinician, Dr. Wells, together with his wife, Rhoda Wynn Wells, was an active and much loved member of the Medical Center community. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Wells family. Herbert Pardes, M.D. President and CEO NY-Presbyterian Hospital Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., M.D. Dean Weill Cornell Medical College
