I traveled all the way to Downstate to see Dr Shalita. I was in my teens still. The best doctor and wonderful person. Truly caring. My father worked for his cousins the Certilmans in Brooklyn for years. So sorry to be lately hear about his passing.

Alan and his gang of friends (growing up) are always some of my fondest memories ......never to be forgotten.

With Alan gone, and also Albert Kligman and John Strauss, there is a conspicuous absence of strength and leadership in acne. Jim Leyden, Diane Thiboutot, and Guy Webster are pretty much all that we have left. Many others have been involved but none, including myself, are cut from the same fabric as these masters in acne, nor as driven. I met a recent graduate in dermatology who trained at Penn in their residency. That person never heard of Albert Kligman or Jim Leyden. I was floored, but in reality not surprised. People like Alan Shalita are not forgotten by many of us, but the specialty loses memory quickly as modern times do not foster recognition of legacy as much as in the past. I find that unfortunate. Anyway , lets do what we can to keep the memory of people like Alan Shalita alive! - Jim Del Rosso -

Alan's ability to go forward in the face of trajedy still amazes me. What a role model for us all. What a great teacher- not only about dermatology but also life! He will be remembered by all who knew him. Best wishes to his family.

Alan Shalita influenced the lives of many, and made it possible for so many people to get the opportunity to become dermatologists. He was always very good to me and was always supportive. Alan will be missed by many people and for very good reasons. I wish his family and closest friends my heartfelt sympathies, as memories may ease the sorrow, but nothing takes it away completely when one is alone in their thoughts and misses a loved one...and he was loved by many.

My cousin Alan was a kind and humble man who was my mother Reba's favorite nephew. We were all proud to have such a special man as a family member. He was an inspiration to all of us, always there to lend a helping hand and words of wisdom. He carried much knowledge of our ancestry and loved talking about our grandpa and other distinguished ancestors. Alan and his sister, Barbara liked to call me Barbareba because I reminded them so much of my mother. A soul such as Alan's was a special gift to all who knew him. With a broken heart I bid my cousin farewell and find comfort that he will be with his beloved daughter, parents and family in heaven.

Dr. Shalita was supportive of women in dermatology even when they got pregnant! (I hate to say over my career this was frequently not the case with many other chairmen.) He contributed greatly to our understanding of acne and how to treat it. He was always there to lend advice even if you did not train under him. A wonderful leader. My condolences to his family.

I was fortunate to have had Alan as my cousin. Through my entire childhood my mother (Alan's father's little sister) expressed nothing short of awe and appreciation for Alan's patience, wisdom and availability when he was called upon for counsel (which was frequent). He was a most devoted nephew, son, father, doctor, teacher and human being.

Alan was more of an inspiration for our entire family than I think he was ever truly aware of. He will be missed by so many, a rare spirit.

I wish him everlasting peace and love.
