ALBERT MAYSLES Obituary

MAYSLES--Albert.

Albert Maysles said, "The real world is exactly what we need to better understand and therefore possibly to love one another." He made documentary films to make our world better. We admired his vision, his energy, his artistry, his generosity, his stories, and his smile. We send our love to his bountifully warm and creative family. Catherine Gund and Agnes Gund

Memories and Condolences
for ALBERT MAYSLES

Not sure what to say?

May 18, 2015

I just learned of Mr. Maysles passing. I met him as a volunteer for Sun Valley Center for the Arts and when the Documentary Film Festival was in its planning stages. That gathering was epic in that all 4 four major doc filmmakers were present in one place at one time. Albert was kind, sweet and brilliant. He gave me one of his videos Salesman which was amazing since my father, a salesman lived through that period. There was no way Mr. Maysles could have known that, and I treasure it. My late sympathies to the family.

So sad to hear about Mr. Maysles passing. I used to be a nanny for his children around 1982-84 while going to school in NYC. I remember how fascinated I was with his work as a documentarian. He was such a talent and will be sadly missed.

On March 5th, we who were the lucky ones, the ones fortunate enough to have been a son, daughter, wife or brother of, to have been a friend or acquaintance of, a colleague of or physician to, to have merely met, to have seen all or perhaps only a small snatch of the body of work of, Albert Maysles, lost someone who made our lives a little more empathetic, a lot more real, and perhaps, even, infinitely more bearable.

In conversation, he impressed as a man whose modesty was as deep and broad as his accomplishment, who was as much in the moment in trivial exchange as he was with his subjects. You might not really know him at all, but he made you feel as though you could and did. That is the gift a humanitarian offers to the world.

I am so sorry for your loss. And for ours as well.

The images you captured of the Rolling Stones during such an important point in their history will forever be seared into my mind. From Madison Square Garden to Muscle Shoales Alabama to Altamont and then, to a studio where you filmed Mick Jagger watching your film is all nothing short of Rock and Roll history. Rest in Peace.

Try as we can we will not understand everything. But we can try to make a difference in the world. How we are view is not always up to us. How we react to our critics can be in our control. The family and friends of Albert are the ones that make life bearable with your fond memories of him. My most sincere condolence.

My memory of Alby is an unusual one. I met him over dinner at Sardi's with a mutual friend, and then we took him to see Dame Edna the second time she was on Broadway. In that performance, at the end of the show she chose audience members whom she used to "recreate" the royal family. Dame Edna noticed Alby early on -- his big white head of hair and his wonderful laugh -- she chose him to be the Queen Mother.

He was whisked backstage where a quick costume change happened, and then she brought out the royal family members one-by-one (other audience members who had caught her eye during the performance).

Alby was laughing so hard when they brought him out onstage that the entire audience started laughing, too. He actually bent over in two he was laughing so hard. Dame Edna knew she had picked a winner that night. It was uproarious fun all around.

The next day I emailed Barry Humphries (Dame Edna's alter-ego) to let her know just what a special person Alby was -- when I mentioned some of Alby's films Barry of course was familiar with them. He called Alby and thanked him for being such a good sport onstage the night before and to let him know he was a fan, too.

I was so happy to have witnessed Alby not only having so much fun, but spreading the spontaneous joy to the audience that night.
