ALEX STANTON Obituary

STANTON--Alex.

Alex Stanton, founder and CEO of Stanton Public Relations & Marketing, passed away on July 9 after bravely fighting cancer. Stanton, a resident of Brooklyn Heights, New York, and Greenwich, Connecticut, was 70 years old.

Stanton spent more than 50 years working in public relations, government affairs, marketing services and business development. In 1995, he founded Stanton Crenshaw Communications, which would later spin off to become Stanton Public Relations & Marketing, a communications firm dedicated to serving clients and working extensively with the private equity and financial services industries. Prior to launching Stanton, he also successfully built and scaled Dorf &Stanton Communications into a national agency.

Stanton developed and managed PR and marketing programs that received numerous industry awards, and was a frequent speaker on business strategy, marketing, and communications issues. He also served as President of the Public Relations Society of America in New York, was a Director of YPO/WPO, and sat on the boards of several companies over the years. Most importantly, he was widely respected by peers, colleagues, and competitors as a professional of consummate skill, intelligence and integrity, and was a mentor to hundreds of professionals who continue to influence the industry today.

He was born and grew up in Brooklyn Heights, the son of Jane Strahan Stanton and Robert Francis Stanton Jr. After moving to Montreal with his family, he graduated high school at St. George's School before graduating from Hobart College in New York. After several years working in the political arena as an organizer, he began his public relations career.

In 1978, Alex married the love of his life, Wendy Congdon, whom he had known since childhood. Wendy, daughter of Donald and Sally Weeks Congdon, also of Brooklyn Heights was a graduate of Sweet Briar College working at Time Inc. for Home Box Office Cable TV when they married. Alex and Wendy built their life together in Brooklyn Heights and Greenwich, raising their two amazing sons, John and Andrew. Sadly, Wendy predeceased Alex by three weeks after her own brief battle with cancer.

When not working more than full-time, Alex was an avid golfer, runner, cyclist, and all-around athlete. Additionally, he was a proud and loving grandfather to his and Wendy's two grandsons, Cedar and Wilder. Alex was also committed to giving back to the community, serving on the boards of several national and local non-profit organizations.

Alex is survived by his two sisters, Judy O'Karma of Fort Bragg, CA, and Anne Stanton Malone of San Francisco, CA, and their families. Wendy is survived by brother Michael Congdon and his family. Alex and Wendy are survived by their sons John Stanton of East Setauket, New York, Andrew Stanton of New York City, and John's family: wife Ashley Stanton, and sons. Additionally, they are survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers or remembrances, donations in Alex's honor to the organizations he worked most closely with are greatly appreciated. Those include:

Alex is and will always be a North Star and guiding light for all of us he mentored and lifted up in our careers, life and successes. He was a true leader and teacher. As much as he taught us in our careers, he taught us even more with his deep and eternal love for his beloved wife Wendy and amazing sons John and Andrew. They will always be his true joy. The grandsons gave him a deep sense of renewal and joy that we were all so honored to witness whenever he spoke of them. The most appropriate honor and gratitude we can do at this time with all of our deep sorrow and collective loss is to pay it forward and mentor our youth. A legacy he gave us and deserves its rightful place in our lives. Deepest sympathies to his beloved sons John and Andrew, his beautiful grandsons, sisters, nieces, nephews, colleagues, clients and the legions he believed in who remain in eternal gratitude.
