ALEXANDER SCHURE Obituary

SCHURE--Dr. Alexander, on October 29, 2009, learning theorist, inventor, educational and technological visionary. He shaped the world for the better as founding President of New York Institute of Technology and Chancellor of Nova University. Dr. Schure was a pioneer of technology enhanced learning, off campus education and computer graphic animation. He believed passionately in the ability of all students to learn, creating teaching machines in the 1950s. He also produced one of the first computer-animated films, Tubby the Tuba. Graduating from high school as a young teen, he went to work to support his family and later attended City College. After military service, he received doctoral degrees in engineering and education from New York University. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including seventeen honorary doctoral degrees and numerous other awards, both academic and athletic. Dr. Schure was the beloved husband of Gail Schure (Strollo), and the late Dorothy (Rubin) Schure, as well as the proud parent of Dr. Barbara Weinschel (Alan), Dr. Matthew Schure (Judy), Louis Schure (Denise), and Dr. Jonathan Schure (Marianne) and proud stepfather of John Impellizeri (Liz). He was also the grandfather of Lawrence, Adam, Naomi, Jared, Deborah, Joshua, Juliana, Dianne, Daniel, Samantha, Michele, Johanna, and Allison, and great-grandfather of Zachary, Henry, Phoebe and Leah. He is also survived by sister Esther Gilbert, and sisters-in-law Bette Bronstein and Ellen Rubin, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Services will be on Sunday, November 1st, 2:30pm, at Gutterman's Funeral Home in Woodbury, New York. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.

I remember with great joy the years I spent working at the Computer Graphix Lab at NYIT. I will always be grateful to Dr. Schure for believing in me and encouraging me. I am a better person because of him. My condolences to the family.
