1920 - 2022
On January 16, 2022, Alfred Abraham passed away peacefully at the age of 101. Alfred, lovingly known as "Uncle Al" to family and friends, was the heart and soul of his family. Alfred was born on April 16, 1920 in Tarrytown, NY to Samuel Abraham and Regina Weisz Abraham. Alfred grew up with two younger sisters, Adele Abraham Lefkowitz and Florence Abraham Frischman who both married and had three children each.
Alfred was an award-winning student who graduated in June 1936 from Washington Irving High school in Tarrytown, NY when he was 16 years old. In 1937 Alfred was accepted to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He attended Michigan for one year then went home for his summer vacation where he got a job at a local bank - the Washington Irving Trust Company in Tarrytown, NY. He found that he enjoyed finance and accounting and decided to attend the NYU School of Commerce night school while working, where he graduated in 1941.
After graduating from NYU, Alfred joined a major accounting firm, S.D. Leidesdorf and Company. He received his CPA in 1943. After working in public accounting for 10 years, he left and went into business as a financial vice president, controller, or Chief Financial Officer for several different companies including Estee Lauder. In 1968, Alfred was offered the job of Financial Vice President and Treasurer by the Congress Financial Corporation. He would remain there until he retired.
Alfred was active in many organizations in New York. He was a member of Masonic organizations where he became Master of the Solomon Lodge in Tarrytown, NY and became a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. Alfred was a very active NYU alumnus. He attended courses and fundraisers for NYU, as well as established the NYU Stern School Alfred B. Abraham Undergraduate Scholarship Fund.
Alfred often took his friends and family to museums, the theater, the symphony, and the opera. As a member of the board of directors of the Musicians Club of New York he felt he could give back to New York's music community. Alfred was known to keep the family updated and Facetimed with family and friends daily. He was devoted to the Jewish faith and was a member of Town and Village Synagogue as well as the Garment Center Synagogue.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Regina Abraham, his sister Adele Abraham Lefkowitz (Samuel Lefkowitz), his sister Florence Abraham Frischman (Joseph Frischman), and his niece Judith Lefkowitz Anderson. Alfred is survived by his companion, Brian Hunter, niece Debra Lefkowitz Kerner (Ron Braunfeld), his nephews Lawrence Lefkowitz (Donna Lefkowitz), William Frischman (Isabel Frischman), Gary Frischman, Daniel Frischman, and many grand-nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations to honor the memory of Alfred Abraham may be sent to the NYU Stern School Alfred B. Abraham Undergraduate Scholarship Fund.
