ALFRED STERN Obituary

STERN--Alfred R. The Trustees, Faculty and Staff of the Mount Sinai Health System mourn the passing of Alfred R. Stern, who served with enthusiasm and distinction on the Mount Sinai Boards of Trustees since 1963. For 50 years, Mount Sinai benefited from the uncommon generosity and steadfast leadership that Alfred brought to every task on the institution's behalf. He led Mount Sinai through periods of extraordinary growth, first as Chairman of the Development Committee, and later as Chairman of the Boards of Trustees from 1977 to 1985. The guidance and support Alfred provided during his tenure helped chart a new course for Mount Sinai's future, and was critical to the founding of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as well as the creation of the Hospital's Guggenheim Pavilion, both of which greatly expanded Mount Sinai's teaching, research and clinical capabilities. Over the years he has generously supported institutional growth initiatives, including the construction of the Annenberg Building and the Campaign to Rebuild Mount Sinai. Alongside his wife Barbara R. Biben, a founding member of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center Advisory Board, Alfred has also directed his support to the Adolescent Health program and endowment. Mount Sinai would not exist as it does today without Alfred's leadership, and we are deeply grateful for his many years of service, generosity and commitment to our institution. In honor of his many contributions, Mount Sinai was proud to award Alfred with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 1997. He will long be remembered for his vision and wise counsel. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Barbara, and the entire family. Peter W. May, Chairman of the Boards of Trustees, Mount Sinai Health System; Kenneth L. Davis, M.D., President and CEO, Mount Sinai Health System; Dennis S. Charney, M.D., Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System

Barbara, I truly enjoyed the short time with Al and you. What a privilege! You were such a loving couple and a testimony of love to those around you. I will miss those "hallway chats" we had. My wish for you is that good memories and the support of friends, loved ones, and our Lord get you through this time. 'May the Lord himself, who is our source of peace, give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all' 2 Thess 3:16

I grew up with Peggy and her brothers and remember him as gallant and kind as we celebrated Peggy's birthday year after year in the grand dining room, or on tv trays in the den.
Fondest memory was when we saw Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and had a sleepover. Happy memories of Mr. Stern.

I am sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Stern from my year as an administrative resident at Mount Sinai back in the Seventies. I would sit in on the finance committee meetings and he would always be so gracious and courteous and patiently answer any questions I had. I feel sure that his spirit is continuing its journey with verve and elan.
