ALICE MATHIAS Obituary
Hammerstein. Everyone at Rodgers & Hammerstein mourns the passing of Alice Hammerstein Mathias. She was a friend to us all, and when the time came for her to assume the business responsibilities of the Hammerstein copyrights, she handled her role with grace, skill, humor, and wisdom. She was a link to the past in the best way possible-she saw SHOW BOAT in 1927, and just last fall she addressed the cast of the musical's New York Philharmonic concert during rehearsals. She will be missed. Ted Chapin & the staff at Rodgers & Hammerstein

An extraordinary spirit--wonderful writer and parent--as well as "keeper of the flame.". "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught"--indeed--she was taught in all the RIGHT ways and lived accordingly. My favorite remark? When asked what race her adopted Asian-American children were she replied, "The human race!" RIP dear lady. Brilliant!
