Alison Henning Obituary

HENNING--Alison Peake, died on July 2nd of cancer at home in New Haven, CT. Beloved wife of the late Basil Duke Henning, Colgate Professor of English History and Master of Saybrook College at Yale University for 29 years. Born to Mr. and Mrs. William Woodhouse Peake in 1918 in Camden, SC. A graduate of Westover School and Smith College (Phi Beta Kappa.) A founder of the Smiffenpoofs at college. Sang with a quartet, the Magpies, for many years. Honorary member of the Yale Glee Club and the Whiffenpoofs. With her husband, she was the recipient of the Yale Medal for service to the University. For more than fifty years, the Hennings traveled to the U.K., principally London, where Professor Henning, a noted scholar of the Tudor and Stuart periods, was an editor of the History of Parliament Trust. She was a member of the Colony Club. She is survived by a daughter, Morgan Stebbins, of Providence, RI, two sons, William of Rumson, NJ and Cameron of New Haven, CT, and by grandchildren Rowland Stebbins, Alicia Peake Henning and Basil Duke Henning. Predeceased by her grandson Cameron Duke Stebbins and her three brothers, Robin, Cameron and David. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 20th at Battell Chapel, 300 College St., New Haven at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Westover School, Mimi Falsey, Director of Development, P.O. Box 847, Middlebury, CT 06762 or to the Cameron Stebbins Memorial Fund, Geoff Liggett, Director of Development, Pomfret School, 398 Pomfret St., Pomfret, CT 06258.

Everyone loved the Duchess. We are so sorry to read that she is gone, but she lived her life to the fullest and seemed to enjoy every day.
