ALVIN DWORMAN Obituary

DWORMAN--Alvin, real estate developer, merchant banker and entrepreneur, a "master in the art of living" for whom work and play were synonymous, passed away peacefully, January 29, 2023, at his home in Scottsdale. A life-long New Yorker until his semi-retirement, Alvin, "AD", was born in Brooklyn. Intensely proud of both his Jewish heritage and being an American, AD dedicated himself to fairness and excellence in whatever he chose to do. He believed that opportunity lies everywhere; one only has to notice what's not apparent to others. Combined with his never-give-up, can-do attitude, his ability to seize opportunity brought success time and again, often converting what seemed to others like certain defeat into victory. Having been a high school Golden Gloves boxer and MVP football player (and remaining an accomplished athlete all his life), upon early graduation AD entered the US Army Specialized Training Reserve Program to serve in WWII. After the war, he graduated law school. His stint as a rookie attorney was extremely short-lived but led him to discover his extraordinary aptitude, skill and passion--deal-making. Throughout his career, AD teamed up on a project basis with other prominent businessmen, acquiring controlling interests in numerous public and private companies while creating a myriad of groundbreaking enterprises. Active in all phases of real estate, he developed, owned and operated commercial, residential and industrial properties across the United States. Often through finance affiliates, he funded major projects for other developers and investors with equity participation and was known for his imaginative and effective financial structures. AD's infectious optimism, self-confidence, energy, willpower, resilience and enthusiasm were without rival. He lived by the motto, "My word is my bond." Relationships with other skilled, talented people were the complementary building blocks of his success. He was difficult and hard-hitting to an opponent, tough and indomitable in the face of adversity, but generous and supportive to allies who gave it their all. Passing along the wisdom and strategies he received from his own mentors, AD influenced generations of soon-to-be successful business initiates as well as his already accomplished partners and colleagues. Projects were diverse and often conceived outside-the-box but they were always forward- thinking and designed to win- win. Business acumen, however, was just one side of AD's exceptional personality. He was also equally dedicated to giving back. A benefactor of countless charitable endeavors, large and small, his focus was on education, medical research and Israel. Leaving the world better than he found it was a value he lived, endorsed and instilled, particularly, in his children. His family continues to honor him by furthering his vision of giving back in perpetuity and promoting the philanthropy of their family foundation. His memory will be cherished in the love of his devoted wife, children, grandchildren, and countless family members, friends, colleagues, associates and employees whose lives he touched, inspired, and changed for the better. Alvin Dworman's legacy of hard work, perseverance, generosity and passion lives on.

I just learned of Alvin Dworman's passing. It has been many years since I have been in New York, working with his brothers, Lester and Darryl. They were my mentors, at a time when others could not be bothered. I am forever grateful for their advice, friendship, and sincerity. Their office was like a second home. I will never forget them. My condolences to the Dworman family. God bless you always.

This was a great American with whom I worked as a lawyer in Washington DC for many years. All the U.S. Senators from New York, especially Sen. Moynihan, considered him a friend as did many Senators of both parties from other states.

He would wear a lapel pin with the number 42 in commemoration of the years he worked with Jackie Robinson in sports promotion before the Dodger great broke into the Major Leagues.

His overseas service in WWII was mostly classified as it was with the OSS -- the predecessor agency to the CIA. He remained active in foreign affairs, serving on federal advisory panels with his expertise in the Middle East.

Among his long list of successful real estate developments was the Bacara Hotel in Santa Barbara, listed when it opened in 2000 as among the 10 best resorts in the world.

At least 30 years ago, I would tell him to take time out to start writing a biography which I know he began dictating but not sure if he ever finished.

It can truly be said in his case that "they don't make them like that anymore."

AD was one of the most brilliant men I have been privileged to know.

Yet AD was so much more than brilliant. Listening about his relationship with Jackie Robinson and his wife that the three forged early in #42´s career still brings tears.

More than his intellect, energy, and spirit, AD was the consummate gentleman. Wanda, AD´s lovely wife (and a very talented painter) once shared a fun story when a table with successful business persons described their best wins; Wanda was adamant she won, she married AD.

He will be missed by thousands. What a life he lived, truly remarkable, what a man he was.

I had the fortune of working at one of Mr. Dworman´s real estate properties he developed and operated in Santa Barbara (the beautiful Bacara Resort & Spa) and he would always take the time to stop and chat with every team member and thank them for their hard work and commitment to creating lasting memories for our guests.
A class act and true legend and who left the world a better place through his efforts and accomplishments. Warmest regards and condolences to the Doorman's.

So sorry to hear of AD's passing. Wonderful obit, right on the money! I'll never forget walking on Madison Avenue with my 6 year-old son, (at the time), Manny, and running into Mr. Dworman, and he said, "How's your big guy"? and he engaged in conversation with him. Made my son feel great and important that an adult took such interest in him. Condolences to Mrs. D, RD and family. God bless, Jeff Sado
