Alyse Castaldi Obituary

1934 - 2022
Alyse Castaldi, age 87, passed away peacefully from Covid-19, on Saturday January 15, 2022, in Brooklyn, NY. She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, John Castaldi. She was a loving mother to Christopher, Philip and Peter, a caring mother-in-law to Cheryl, Jennifer, and Molly and always a devoted grandmother to Chloe, Abigail, Connor, Tyler, and Caitlyn.

Born the only child of Charles and Maude Israel and raised in East Norwalk, CT, Alyse graduated from East Norwalk High School. She moved to Brooklyn to attend Pratt Institute where she studied Graphic Arts and where she met her husband John. They married in May 1961. After graduation from Pratt in 1956 she lived in Brooklyn Heights while working as a graphic artist in New York City, until her first child Christopher was born and ultimately moved to Park Slope.

There was nothing that Alyse loved more than being a Park Slope parent. She loved the sound of her boys playing on Carroll St in front of the Brownstone she worked so hard to maintain. She believed that she was a custodian of the home and responsible for preserving the original Victorian grandeur. The house was on the Park Slope house tour in the 1970's and again 40 years later. She also donated her time to the Brooklyn Museum on the museum's Community Committee helping return the museum to an attraction for visitors outside of Brooklyn.

She will be best remembered as a mom beyond just her children, for the many sleepovers or dinner that friends stayed for. The Park Slope community always knew that on Christmas Night her house was open to everyone, for a glass glogg and cookies, as long as the lights on the large Christmas tree in the bay window were still on.

She will also be sorely missed by her husband John and their family, and neighbors who spent many a summer night on the stoop sharing a glass of wine.

Alyse was a long-term breast cancer survivor and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. www.nationalbreastcancer.org

I spent a big portion of my childhood in that house up the block on Carroll St. It was such a warm and inviting place due to the kindness and caring tendencies of Mrs. Castaldi.

She was one of the nicest, sweetest people I´ve ever met. She will always be remembered that way.
