ANDREW GORDON Obituary

GORDON--Andrew S. Independent architect, designer and artist formerly with GFT/Giorgio Armani died on September 5th at his home in East Hampton, NY, with family and friends by his side after a long battle with cancer. He was 52. Andrew was known for his modern, minimalist aesthetic. Early in his career he worked with the architecture firm Hanna/Olin. He worked in New York as an architect and designer for GFT/Giorgio Armani for ten years before launching Andrew Gordon, Inc. www.andrewgordoninc.com, with projects in New York, Florida and California. In later years his focus shifted from architecture to painting, exploring variations in light and texture. Andrew balanced aesthetic perfectionism with a playful spirit and loyalty to friends. He delighted in his nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was passionate about his gardens. He was the longtime partner of the late Christopher H. Browne. Andrew graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Design of the Environment. He studied architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His charitable interests included, among others, Rockefeller University, Massachusetts General Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is survived by his parents, Robert Gordon III and Eleanor S. Gordon, his brothers, Robert and William, and a sister, Elizabeth Dellenbaugh. Services will be private. Contributions in his name may be made to Rockefeller University, www.rockefeller.edu, and the East Hampton Village Preservation Society, www. villagepreservationsociety.org

I knew Andy for many years when we were both attending the University of Pennsylvania in the 1980s. He was a smart, shy, and very sweet person. As I was in the MSW program, I quickly recognized a kindness in Andy that is very rare. One of my favorite memories of Andy was when he would share his architectural projects in his small (I believe it was on Pine St.) studio apartment in Center City, Philadelphia. The entire space was covered with fantastic renderings of Andy's drawings for homes, offices, public spaces - as well as fine art oil paintings he had painted. We had great talks about art and architecture well into the late evening. My other favorite memory with Andy was when I was visiting Andy at his parent's home in CT., and we hid in the shrubbery on the property of the Glass House - and watched Philip Johnson pace back and forth in his famous Glass House. It was starting to rain and we enjoyed watching the famous architect point to what we assumed were leaks in the Glass House roof - thus the cause of Mr. Johnson's anxious pacing! We shared a great laugh over this amazing experience. I also enjoyed our visits to the suburbs of Philadelphia, where Andy's very sweet and gracious grandmother lived. He was always such a gentleman in her presence!
Andy was a unique, creative and caring soul, who graced all of our lives who were lucky to have known him and to have shared time with him.

Judge Skelton Smith architects remembers a remarkably talented young man at a time when we all were all young and full of promise. One of your first jobs - one of our first employees. How lucky we were to have known one an other. There is great sadness in the office
