McGOWAN--Andrew. Andrew Scott McGowan (AKA Scott), PhD, of Woodlawn, Bronx, NY (formerly of Kingman Terrace, Yonkers, NY for 40 years), died on March 4, 2021, due to complications from cancer. Born on January 7, 1940, he was raised in Avoca, PA, the son of the late Andrew C. and Teresa Scott McGowan. Scott was educated at Fordham University (Ph.D, P.D. and M.S.), Niagara University (M.A.) and the University of Scranton (B.S.), graduating Magna Cum Laude, class of 1961. He taught English at Harrison High School, New York from 1965-1967. From 1967-1988, he was a school counselor and chair of the counseling department at Roosevelt High School, Yonkers, NY. He also worked as head counselor in an after school program for disadvantaged youth. From 1988 until his retirement in 2014, he was a professor in the College of Education, Department of Counseling and Development, at Long Island University (LIU), C.W. Post Campus, where he was named Senior Professor in 2010. As chair, he led the Counseling & Development Department in its successful CACREP accreditation process. During this period, he also served for three years as LIU's Coordinator of the Tactical Officers Education Program at the US Military Academy, West Point. Scott's scholarly contributions include over 240 published works in refereed journals, chapters in scholarly books, and educational television, where he was the moderator/ creator of three television series, most notably "American College Focus," which appeared on PBS. Over a period of 18 years he served as editor of a number of counseling journals, most notably two terms as the editor of the Journal of Counseling & Development, the flagship journal of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Scott was the former President of the national Counseling Association for Humanistic Education & Development (C-AHEAD), past President of the Westchester/Putnam/ Rockland Counseling Association and the NYCA chair/ representative to the North Atlantic Region of ACA. Throughout his long career, Scott received many honors and awards including the ACA Hitchcock Distinguished Professional Service Award; the NYCA Patterson Award for Distinguished Professional Services and Contributions to the Counseling Profession; the C-AHEAD's Hollis Publication Award; the ACA Distinguished Counselor Award; the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching (LIU's most prestigious award for instructional excellence); the Outstanding Faculty Award from the US Military Academy, West Point; the University of Scranton O'Hara Alumni Award; and the Fordham University, College of Education and Information Sciences Alumni Achievement Award. A former US Army Captain (in December of 1962 he reported to Fort Ord, CA and was honorably discharged in June of 1965), he was awarded the US Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. Scott is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marian Kearney McGowan. He also leaves his son, Andrew S. McGowan, Jr., his wife, Katy and their daughters, Isabella, 13, and Ariela, 10. Also surviving is his sister, Marianne McGowan and her husband, Richard Scaramozza, of Brookline, MA. Scott is also survived by many loving cousins and in- laws. A funeral mass was celebrated on March 9 at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church, Bronx, NY. Interment followed, with military honors, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
