Anne Hahn Obituary

HAHN--Anne Shriver (Nancy), 80, died peacefully in her home in Haverford, PA on February 18, 2009. She was born October 26, 1928 in Manhattan, NY. She was the youngest of three children born to Alfred and Anne (nee Fowler) Shriver. She graduated from Madeira Boarding School in Virginia where she was Class President. She attended Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She took two years of accounting at the American Institute of Banking, and studied biometrics and calculus at Cornell Medical School. She became a statistical analyst in the Department of Biometrics at New York Hospital. She was also one of the first women admitted to the officers' training program at Chase Manhattan Bank in NY. In 1951 she wed Stephen Hahn in Paris, France. She was a loving and devoted mother to three children Rob, Anne Elizabeth and Tom. While raising her children she was elected president of the Yorkville Youth Council's Board, a non-profit organization supporting after-school centers in the New York public school system. In addition, Nancy was the Assistant Administrative Director of Diller-Quaile School of Music, NY, and was the Administrative Director and Headmaster's assistant at St. Bernard's School, NY. In 1980 she moved near Philadelphia where she became assistant to the director of Performing Arts program at Bryn Mawr College and later a legal secretary for Crawford and Diamond law offices. At the same time, she created ASH Handwovens, her own line of handwoven fabrics. Later in life, her love of animals led her to become a member of the Board of Directors at Women's SPCA of Pennsylvania. She compiled and edited a pioneering book on the human/companion animal bond, "New Perspectives on out Lives with Companion Animals" published by University of Pennsylvania press. She dedicated her last 15 professional years, into her late 70s, as an event planner for St. David's Church, in Wayne, PA, arranging and coordinating weddings. She spent every summer with her children, grandchildren and extended family at her summer home in the woods of Forestburgh, NY as her family has done since the 1880s. Nancy possessed a keen curiosity which led her to engage in many diverse intellectual endeavors. She was kind and generous not only to her family but also to her many friends. Nancy will be deeply missed. Mrs. Hahn is survived by her three children, Rob, Weston CT, Anne Elizabeth Block, Westlake Village, CA, Tom, Piedmont CA, brother Donald Shriver, Maplewood, NJ and eight grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Denton Shriver. A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at St. David's Church (old church) 763 South Valley Forge Rd., Wayne, PA 19087.
