ANSEL LURIO Obituary

LURIO--Ansel. Ansel Lurio, 38, disability advocate and subject of "Moonrise," died of heart failure Tuesday, September 27. Ansel was a vibrant part of his Yonkers waterfront neighborhood and of the Dobbs Ferry community where he grew up. At age 3, he was diagnosed with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, a devastating disease that destroys muscle tissue and causes early death. He used a wheelchair from age 11. Despite his disability Ansel flourished. He was quick-witted and stubborn, loved reading, listening to jazz, eating and cooking. He attended Columbia, where he DJed at WKCR and played clarinet in the marching band. Later he completed a master's degree at the Cooperstown Graduate Program, after which he was employed by Historic House Trust of NYC and by the Confucius Institute at Pace University. When his mother published a book about him, Ansel enthusiastically participated in her readings. He was the model for Archie in the Broadway musical and movie 13. A fierce disability advocate, Ansel consulted at both the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and at Wave Hill in the Bronx. He was on the board of Westchester Disabled on The Move and was a litigant in the current class action lawsuit against Lyft. Ansel will be missed by many who admired his spirit and humor. He will be mourned especially by his mother Penny Wolfson and father Joseph Lurio, his sisters Tobi and Diana; cousins, aunts, uncles, a niece and brother-in-law. He lived a great life and was a shining light for all.

I have been thinking a lot about Ansel these days as we undertake a big set of projects in NYC and Staten Island with historic houses. Ansel would have loved this. We are working in accessibility projects. Hats off to a wonderful person.

My condolences to all who mourn his loss. I still pass the house where he lived as a boy and remember the friendly and energetic greeting he gave me as he went zipping by in his chair.

Sure enjoyed have Ansel as a student at the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies. Loved his courage and humor. He was an honored guest at one of our family holiday meals. It was a terrific time. Miss him.

Dear Penny and Joe,
We are all deeply saddened to hear of Ansel´s death. He was a person of such courage. When he was a student he was willing to try anything and everything. He had a great intellectual curiosity and he taught us a great deal about living with disability. All of us at CGP share in your grief and send our deepest sympathy.

Dear Penny and Joe,

I worked at the Cooperstown Graduate Program when Ansel was a student at CGP. He was a source of inspiration. I retired last January and former students sent video messages wishing me well. I will always treasure Ansel's message.
I will be thinking of you and your family .
Sincerely, Catherine Raddatz

Dear Joe and Penny,
We join you and your family both in your sadness at Ansel passing and your wonderful remembrances of your son. You both were incredible anchors for him throughout his life and he grew and flew independently because of the incredible nurturing and opportunities you provided him. I am sure this is among the hardest experience to go through- losing your child. He will always be in your heart and on your shoulders looking out for you.
Sending our love to you and the Wolfson- Lurio families,
Monica (Ultmann) and David (Harris)
