Anthony McAllister Obituary

McALLISTER-Anthony J., Jr., former President of McAllister Towing and Transportation Company, Inc, died peacefully surrounded by his family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, of heart complications on December 9th. He was 75. Mr. McAllister, Tony, was born on July 31, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Prep (1948) where he was president of his class and captain of the track team. He then graduated from SUNY Maritime College at Fort Schuyler (1952). He served two years in the US Navy before joining his family-owned tugboat company. The McAllister company, started in 1864 by Tony's great grandfather James, has grown into the largest privately-owned tugboat company on the East Coast. Tony led the fourth generation in acquiring the company in 1974 and served as President from 1979 until his retirement in 1984. Four members of the fifth generation now serve in senior positions, including Tony's son AJ, III. In addition to the tugboat business the company also operates The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company. Tony was pre-deceased by his first wife, Muriel, and by his brother, Donal. He is survived by his widow, Merle, his children, AJ, III, Michael Anne, Reid, Gregg, and six grandchildren, Anthony, Brooklyn, Ian, Rory, Gerard and Justine. He is also lovingly remembered by his surviving siblings, Patrice Guiney, Marjorie Toner, Eileen Donovan, Brian, Bruce, and Michael McAllister and the entire extended family. Viewing will be held Monday, December 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA. (610-449-0300).
