ARNOLD MINDELL Obituary

MINDELL--Dr. Arnold. Dr. Arnold Mindell, author, physicist, and founder of Process Oriented Psychol-ogy, passed away on June 10, 2024, in Yachats, OR. Born January 1, 1940 in Schenectady, NY to Bianka and Max Mindell, Arny earned an M.S. in 1964 from MIT in applied physics and mechanical engineering, did research at the ETH technical institute in Zurich, and received a PhD in psychology from Union Institute in 1972. Wanting to understand the nature of people, as well as the physical universe, he became a Jungian analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute in Switzerland in 1970. He then developed Process Oriented Psychology (Process Work), now with over 20 schools around the world, and wrote 23 books. Pioneer in humanistic, transpersonal, and body-oriented psychotherapies and conflict resolution, and known for his synthesis of physics and psychology, the "Dreambody" and "Worldwork" large group conflict resolution, and more. He and his wife Amy taught Process Work around the world and were resident teachers at Esalen Institute in the 1990s. He and colleagues founded the first school of Process Work (FGPOP) in Zurich in 1982, and the Process Work Institute in Portland, OR, 1989. Since 1986, Arny and Amy have lived in Yachats, OR, where Arny rejoiced at the magnificence of nature and the sea. Arny was loved as a wonderful partner, friend, and brilliant teacher to thousands all over the world, known for his joyful spirit, passion for research, and desire to make the world a better place for all. He'll be deeply missed, though he will always be present in the hearts of everyone who loves him.

Arnie Made a big difference in my life as a therapist. It was a brilliant theorist and an amazing practitioner who implies the world of psychology and therapy in a profound way. He will be missed by many of his students.

Dear Arny!! I never thought you would respond an email I sent to you from Quito, Ecuador. You seemed so far away, and I know you were incredibly busy, sorting hundreds of emails a day. And there it was your reply! And not just a quick note, but you were deeply relating to me, to the Mountains I carry in my heart, in the Andes, and seeing my Soul, telling me you are my people too, that we are together. I was going through a very intense asthma attack, that lasted a few days, and your presence felt so important to me, even if mostly on spirit. Learning with you and with your collaborators through the Process Work Institute has been probably the biggest blessing in what is being a very rich life. Thank you for all your brilliance and genius, your uncanny being, your open and warm heart, your amazing fluidity, and all the gifts your creativity has given all of us. Even as you move with all your being into hyperspace you keep blessing me and us.

Arny, you came across me with Amy, one evening when I was walking the street in Portland, looking in awe at the ligthened trees. We stopped to say hello, and your only words looking at me intensively were "I can see the stars in your eyes". Dr Arnold Mindell: World Facilitator, Founder of Process Oriented Psychology, Author, Psychotherapist, Researcher and Physicist. Beloved partner of Amy, mentor to hundreds, deeply loved teacher to thousands of students, colleagues and friends. Arny, you seemed to leave suddenly. We are heartbroken. But somehow it doesn't feel strange, that you've more fully joined the spirit world. To me you were a spirit guide, with your eagle eye, vigilant view of your student's and the world's 'wholeness' journey. You taught that no-one will be free, until all of us and all parts are free, 'Deep Democracy,' both an approach toward ourselves, our psychological and spiritual freedom and what I love the most, a profound way to work for sustainable change and Social Justice. As Amy and Dawn eloquently say, 'you are present in the hearts of so many who love you', from all over the world and here in Australia. You have made my world a better place, Thank You Arny.
