ARTHUR MAY Obituary

MAY--Arthur.

Arthur May of New York City passed away on July 20, 2018. He was a distinguished architect and painter. As a partner in charge of design at Kohn Pedersen Fox and then Principal at May & Pinska, Mr. May designed many notable and iconic buildings, including the Opus Dei Regional Headquarters, NYC, 1000 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, ABC Broadcast Studio, NYC, and 188 East 70th Street, NYC. A native of New York, Mr. May received architecture degrees from Rensselaer and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Louis I. Kahn and Neil Welliver. Mr. May is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture and the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize. He is also a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work has been published extensively and has received numerous awards. Once retired from architecture, Mr. May began painting full-time in his studio in Long Island City. He is survived by his wife, Penny, two daughters, Elizabeth and Juliana, son-in-law, Tzachi, and grandson, Lee, all of whom loved and adored him.

Arthur was a wonderful gentleman, an excellent architect, and a fine mentor to many of the designers who had the honor of working with him. I remember sitting next to him at a restaurant on fifth ave many years after I worked with him at KPF. We talked about architecture, art and life. A true artist.
