BARBARA DANIELSON Obituary

DANIELSON--Barbara Strachan Deering, 66, passed away at her home in Maine on December 2nd. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia to Rosemary Sankey, a former dancer with the New York City Ballet and a John Powers model, and James Deering Danielson, a Foreign Service officer. Barbara spent much of her early childhood in Europe and the Middle East, returning to the United States as a teenager. She graduated from Hollins College, Roanoke, Virginia, with a degree in Military History, followed by a degree in Interior Design from Inchbald School of Design in England. Upon her return to the US, she worked for Hastings Design and then the Greater Miami Opera, where she was a member of the production staff. In 1985, she became a director of Miami Corporation, a family concern. Barbara's civic activities included the Dade-Monroe Mental Health Board in Miami, Florida, where she chaired the Alcohol Committee and the Cuban Haitian Task Force before becoming President of the organization. She was a Founding Member of the Miami City Ballet, serving on the Board for many years. Barbara represented the Deering family for the Vizcaya Museum and the Charles Deering Estate. In Northeast Harbor, Maine, she was a board member of the College of the Atlantic and of the Women's Health Center. Barbara supported the Northeast Harbor Library, the YMCA, and Friends of Acadia. She was a hospice volunteer with Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, Maine. Barbara adored the beauty and tranquility of Northeast Harbor and Mt. Desert Island. In recent years, she spent much of her time in Sun Valley, Idaho, which she similarly cherished. Barbara is survived by stepdaughters, Carolyn Napolitano, Lindsley Lowell Monfort and Loring Lowell, her sister, Jocelyn Tennille, her brother, Charles Seitz, her stepmother, Beverly Danielson, two nieces and five nephews. Barbara was an exceedingly warm and loving person, and radiated an infectious happiness to her many friends and family. Her credo "Live Well Laugh Often Love Much" captures her spirit quite beautifully. Barbara will be greatly missed. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Deering Estate Foundation, 16701 SW 72nd Avenue, Palmetto Bay, FL, 33157 or Friends of Acadia, 43 Cottage Street, P.O. Box 45, Bar Harbor, ME, 04609.

Barbara was a long-time supporter of the nonprofit organization I head -- the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR). But over the years, I was fortunate to get to know her -- to have lunch with her and speak with her on many occasions. So to me, she was far more than a sympathetic supporter, she became a friend -- a gracious, interesting, generous, and thoughtful friend. I will miss her, and send my sincere condolences to her family and her many other friends.

Barbara was a woman of exquisite taste, questioning mind and always marvelous company. She was a loved and loving "Mother" to "her girls", her pets and many friends. Her very strong self of sense was an inspiration to many.

Barbara's laughter lives on in my memory. Memories of going to a Cuban restaurant in Miami, and then to listen to the Lebeck sisters, tickets to the Miami Ballet, Krishna Das, and the pure joy she brought to being with her. A lovely friend.

I enjoyed delivering to Barbra for the last 13 years in Northeast Harbor. As brief as our visits were, she always greeted me with her lively smile. I had the pleasure of meeting her daughter, Lindsley and her sister, Jocelyn and Barbra just beamed as she introduced us. She did a great job on her rescue shepherd who was skidish towards men, but quickly learned to come to me for a dog biscuit! I was shocked to hear of her passing and will greatly miss her presence on my route. Keith ~ Fedex BGR

Barbara allowed me to work with her dogs, Driggs and Britta. She reflected her appreciation with them by saying "Thank You' for any completed task. I have thought of her, saying this to her 'fur-kids' often since hearing of her passing. I think it'll be a good habit to carry on. Thank You, Barbara. God Speed, Dear Lady.
