GERARD--Barbara DeBernarda. Barbara DeBernarda Gerard, a vibrant and accomplished woman, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the age of 81. Born in the Bronx, Barbara lived a life filled with creativity, dedication, and love. Barbara pursued her passion for education and the arts with remarkable determination. She earned an art degree from New York University and later achieved a Ph.D. in education from Nova Southwestern Univer-sity in Florida. Her aca- demic achievements reflected her lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. Barbara dedicated much of her professional career to the New York City Board of Education, where she worked tirelessly to inspire and educate countless students. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Barbara was deeply involved in cultural and community endeavors. She served as president of the National Organization of Italian American Women, a role that allowed her to celebrate her heritage while empowering others. Her leadership and charisma left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside her. Barbara was also a talented artist whose creativity extended beyond her professional life. She found joy in painting and other artistic pursuits, which she shared with those around her. A passionate traveler, she explored the world with curiosity and enthusiasm, always seeking new experiences and inspiration. Her love for the arts was evident not only in her own creations but also in her unwavering support for artistic communities. Barbara's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. She was a devoted mother to her son David and daughter-in- law Maria, as well as a loving and proud grandmother to Ada Mae. Known affectionately as "Nanny," she brought warmth and joy to her family's life through her generosity and outgoing spirit. Barbara's parents, Arthur and Edith, as well as her husband Marvin Hartenstein, predeceased her but undoubtedly influenced the com- passionate and charismatic woman she became. Splitting her time between New York City, East Hampton, NY and Fort Lauderdale, FL, Barbara embraced life fully wherever she went. Her magnetic personality made her beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Friends and family alike will sorely miss her presence but will forever treasure the memories they shared with such an extraordinary woman.
