BARBARA HELLMAN Obituary

HELLMAN--Barbara G.,

died on November 12, 2016 at Mount Sinai Medical Center after a determined battle with lymphoma at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her life partner, Gilbert Glass. She is survived by her nephews CAPT David Hellman (United States Navy, Ret.) and Atty Steven Hellman, her former sister-in-law Marilyn, David's wife Robbie, great-niece Elizabeth, great- nephew Sam, Steven's life partner Candace Jones, her cousin Florence Present, and other extended family and close friends. Barbara was very fond of, and ably attended by, her longtime personal physician, Dr. Lynn Ratner who provided outstanding medical care over the years. Barbara was also grateful to Mr. Pat Duffy who was a very supportive friend of both she and Gil for many years. Barbara was born and grew up in Carbondale, PA, the daughter of the late Harry and Sarah Hellman and older sister to her brother Myron, who preceded her in death in 2004. Growing up she loved spending time at Crystal Lake with family and friends. Barbara graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and shortly thereafter she moved to Manhattan's Upper West Side where she lived for the rest of her life. Barbara and Gil shared nearly 60 wonderful years together reveling in all that New York City had to offer including a special affinity for Central Park. They loved traveling extensively around the world, including to her favorite destination of Florence, Italy. Barbara was a life-long lover of the arts, and she and Gil spent countless hours taking in performances at the Metropolitan Opera and all that Lincoln Center had to offer. It gave her great joy to spend the last 20 years of her career working in the Development Department at The Metropolitan Opera Association. She regaled family and friends with many a story of her time spent fund raising, charitable giving and taking care of "well-heeled" clients and donors. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held in the Spring of 2017.

Miss so many wonderful people who entered my life, Barbara was among them. Barbara and Gil were our go to destination whenever we were in NYC, We spent many, many New Year Eve celebrations at the apartment
with their eclectic gathering - students, opera lovers, aspiring opera singers, friends and family who came and went throughout the evening to partake of Barbara's wondrous offering of desserts and at the stroke of midnight
gathering on the terrace with a glass of champagne in hand to welcome the New Year, watching the fireworks in Central Park. That became our New Year tradition right through the year 2000 and beyond. Barbara made it all happen in her calm, intelligent, tasteful way. Loved her and miss her.

Barbara and I grew up as close cousins in Carbondale, Pa. We spent every weekend together between Carbondale and Crystal Lake, Pa. Her Dad drove us to all of the High School Basketball Games.
