BARBARA JAKOBSON Obituary

JAKOBSON--Barbara. The Trustees and staff of The Museum of Modern Art mourn the loss of Trustee Barbara Jakobson. Barbara's long and wonderful relationship with the Museum began when her aunt gave her a MoMA membership when she was 12 years old. Deeply passionate and knowledgeable about art and architecture, she was a constant source of wisdom and insight whose discerning judgement was matched by her sharp wit. She lived life to the fullest and was unwavering in her commitment to modern art and artists. She joined MoMA's Board In 1974 after having been very active since 1961 with the Junior Council. She immersed herself in the Museum's fabric as a collector and devotee of modern and contemporary art. A brilliant storyteller, she loved to share her reminiscences with staff members. She was a close friend to many in the art world and was a tireless advocate for MoMA. Among her many triumphs on behalf of the Museum was playing a role in Leo Castelli's decision to give Robert Rauschenberg's Bed to MoMA in 1989. Barbara was indefatigable and over the years she served on various Trustee Committees including the Committee on Painting and Sculpture (joining in 1968); Architecture and Design (serving as Honorary Vice Chair since 2002); Learning and Engagement (formerly the Education Committee); and Archives, Library, and Research (serving as Chair from 2002 to 2008). She will be sorely missed and we extend our deepest sympathies to her daughters, Maggie Wheeler and Jenna Torres, and her granddaughters. The Board of Trustees of The Museum of Modern Art
