BARBARA OBRIEN Obituary

O'BRIEN--Barbara Ellen,

M.D., 83, of Manhattan and Shelter Island Heights, N.Y., died on November 6 in Ft. Myers, Fla., where she lived since 2009. She was born September 14, 1934 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and received a B.A. from The College of New Rochelle in 1956, an M.A. in philosophy from The Sorbonne in 1957 and an M.D. from Leuven in 1962. She completed her residency in 1967 at St. Vincent's Hospital, where she served with distinction in many positions including chief of inpatient psychiatry, chief of outpatient psychiatry and leader of the Quality Assistance Committee before retiring in May 2002. She was an exemplary teacher, supervisor and mentor to staff members on all levels. She is survived by her two loving brothers, Raymond O'Brien (Heidi) of Ft. Myers, and Gerald O'Brien of Manhattan; a nephew, Raymond A. O'Brien (Elizabeth) of Orlando, Fla.; a niece, Marlene Hayes (Patrick) of Darien, Conn; a great-nephew, Michael O'Brien; as well as two great-nieces, Emily and Megan Hayes.
