BERNARD BERGREEN

BERGREEN--Bernard D., died peacefully in his home in New York City on November 5, 2023, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his three children, Timothy Bergreen, Thomas Bergreen, and Karen Bergreen, daughters-in-law, Ann Danelski and Hnin Le Khaing, son-in-law Daniel Alonso, six grand-children, David Bergreen, Matthew Bergreen, Abigail Bergreen, Emma Bergreen, Danny Alonso, and Teddy Alonso. A lifelong New Yorker, Bernard was born to Harry and Jenny Bergreen on July 13, 1923. Upon graduating from New York University in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the height of WWII. He participated in the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns and later served on Occupation Duty in Japan. After the war, Bernard earned an LLB from Columbia Law School in New York and began a decades-long legal career, first with his brother and later as the General Counsel for the Gilman Paper Company and the Howard Gilman Foundation. He married Barbara Richman on October 8, 1958. The couple spent their lives in Manhattan until her death in 2021. Bernard was a voracious news consumer and active in Democratic politics. He was passionate about golf and spent his life trying to master the sport. Semi- retired in the last years of his life, Bernard was an attentive and loving grandfather. At age 100, he remained informed and curious about the state of the world. He will be dearly missed.
