BERNARD KOVITZ Obituary

KOVITZ--Bernard. While we mourn the loss of Bernard Kovitz, who passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022, we celebrate his life of nearly 95 years. Bernard was born, in Brooklyn, to Polish immigrants, Max and Yetta, living with his brother Joel, a commercial photographer who served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and sister Esther, who taught dance in the New York City public schools. He loved many things - his family, the Brooklyn Dodgers, hiking in the Adirondack Mountains, coffee, dancing, travel, sailing, movies, and life itself. Bernard, known as Bernie among his friends, was a graduate of Baruch College with a focus on business. He then attended The Maritime Academy of New York at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx, class of 1947, where he met many of his lifelong friends. From there, he joined the United States Naval Reserve and served for three years as a lieutenant (junior grade). He went to the Harvard School of Business and then became a certified public accountant. He put his education to use working as comptroller for several retail companies and then he ended his long career as the director of finance for law firm David, Polk & Wardwell. He was active in his synagogue, Congregation Shaarei Shalom in Riverdale. Bernard leaves behind his wife, Helen, and her two children, Andy Gross, and Susan Rivers. He also is survived by his son Paul Kovitz and daughter-in-law, Nancy Dahlgren, and daughter, Lisa Kovitz (their mother, Barbara Kovitz died in 1984). The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, for donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Calvary Hospital (providers of hospice care).

I worked for Mr. Kovitz at the beginning of my career. He treated me well and fairly. I will always remember that short period of time working for him. My condolences to his family.

Although Bernie was 25 years older than me, he was
a great role model that my parents (his Aunt and Uncle
Lilly and Julius) encouraged me to follow. I was thrilled that Bernie came with his other cousin Arthur
and I to visit Wyszkow, Poland on a US government sponsored trip to see and find our common roots! Bernie was always an intelligent, kind and generous man. I will miss him dearly. May his memory be a blessing.
