BERNARD LANDER Obituary

LANDER--Bernard, Ph.D. With profound sorrow Touro College, its affiliates, Board of Trustees, faculty, and administration mourns the passing of its founder and president Dr. Bernard Lander. To paraphrase the words of the prophet Elisha, Dr. Lander was the consummate father both to his family and to his people. Imbued with a love of Torah he was single-minded in his commitment to spread its learning and values to the entire Jewish people. Those values also compelled him to be a champion for the civil rights and education of all peoples. Born on the lower east side of Manhattan 94 years ago to David and Goldie Lander he rose to become a pulpit rabbi, a professor of sociology at Hunter College, Dean of Yeshiva University's Bernard Revel Graduate School, advisor to Presidents of the United States, and in 1971 - the founder and President of Touro College. As our President for almost forty years, the college grew from a handful of students to an institution of higher education serving over 17,000 students throughout the world. His vision, which at all times informed the mission of the College, was to enhance Judaism and strengthen the Jewish people as well as to serve humanity. He not only recognized but made a reality the holy obligation to serve society's needs as a whole while promoting the welfare of his people. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his brother Nathan, his son Rabbi Daniel Lander, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Ohr Ha Chaim, Ester Greenfield, Debbie Waxman and Hana Lander, and to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May the entire family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Touro College Dr. Alan Kadish, Senior Provost Mark Hasten, Chairman of the Board
