BERNARD ROGERS Obituary

ROGERS--Bernard Joseph.

Award winning publisher and United States Marine Corps Captain, passed away after a brave, dignified battle with Parkinson's disease in High- land Beach, FL at 84 years of age. A Mass was held in his honor at Ascension Church in Boca Raton on August 13, 2016. Born in 1931 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY, to Bernard Radziewicz and Josephine Dabrowsky, Bernard attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary and then Seward Park High School on the Lower Eastside of Manhattan. During his youth he was active in the local Boy's Club, President of the Marble Collegiate Church Youth Club, and a national swimmer placing third in the Olympic trials. He received a sports scholarship to Long Island University where he was captain of the swim team for three years, Si Lobello Most Valuable Player, Senior Class President, member of the Honor Society, and the New York Representative to the National Conference of Christian and Jews. He spent six summers lifeguarding at Rockaway Beach where he was the youngest ever chief lifeguard. After university, Bernard joined the New York City Police force based in Harlem and then volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He attended Officer Training School in Quantico, VA and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC where he proudly coached their undefeated swim team and became Captain. He served throughout Europe and in Lebanon. Following retirement from the military, Bernard embarked on what would become a 45-year career in the medical publishing business. Starting as a sales representative for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, he went on to publish a group of industry-leading journals including Modern Medicine. He remained with these publications through their ownership by The New York Times, Harcourt Brace Jovanovitch, and Advanstar. As President of Health Care Publications at Harcourt Brace and Advanstar he was a widely respected member of the Health Care community hosting the industry's leading award ceremony, the Aesculapius Awards, for many years. He continued his position at Quadrant Healthcare before retiring. While raising his four children in Manhasset, NY, he was an avid tennis competitor at Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club where he served on the board and as Athletic Director for many years. During his retirement he enjoyed time in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland with his wife Margaret O'Shea with whom he shared 63 years. Along with his wife, Bernard is survived by his children, Michael, Eileen Seery, Elizabeth Barrowcliffe, and Julie Blandford as well as his 15 grandchildren and his sisters Ann Fitten and Joan Moore. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. His accomplishments, loyalty, and work ethic will remain an inspiration to us all. His contribution to the University of Miami Brain Endowment Bank will hopefully affect developments in finding a cure for neurological disease. Memorial services will be held in New York this fall. Condolences can be sent c/o Glick Funeral Home, 3600 North Federal Highway Boca Raton, FL 33431 or www. glickfamilyfuneralhome.com

I feel privileged to have met Bern Rogers when he visited the company I worked for. He was an inspiration to all of us who were tasked to represent Modern Medicine and he could certainly make us laugh!

Bernie was always there to help you get a lead on a new job and wouldn't expect or take anything for his effort. He knew everyone at many levels on a first name basis and was proud "to help". While a big strapping guy, he was Christ-like in his almost devotion to others.
I followed him when he left his Pfizer territory and it was no small task to both match his numbers nor explain "where's Bernie" to the physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health workers Bernie impressed.
I was proud to know him and will miss him as both a titan of the industry and a good friend. God bless.

A solid individual. He gave me my start in medical publishing and promoted me to serve as his first female sales rep. In my interview he asked "Tell me about yourself". I said, "My father died when I was 10". He replied, "So did mine, I'll bet you're scrappy", and he hired me. Solid guy. Could speak key yiddish words when making a point. Rest in peace.

Mr. Rogers only became Bernie after I graduated from college. What can I say? He was the father of my very best friend and welcomed me into his home and his life as another daughter. I think we both appreciated that despite our very humble beginnings, our memories were shared in all manner of impressive settings: The historic brick buildins of Harvard University, Mets games on the porch of his beautiful Manhasset home, courtside seats to the Virginia Slims tennis tournament, countless fancy publishing events in Manhattan where two broke and hungry recent college grads could eat and drink to their hearts' content, poolside at the Ritz Carlton in Florida, where despite your physical limitations we were able to laugh and reminisce and re-connect. Above all, Bernie, I commend, thank, and cherish you for two things: first, you were the perfect dad to my very best friend. Your constant love, respect and support for Beth was a touchstone that shaped her life. She loved being your daughter and all that it entailed. Secondly, well, I thank you for the love, respect and support you gave me. You always saw me, you got me, you appreciated me for all the reasons that my own family found me so hard to understand. I know that you are at peace now, but I miss you being here on earth. XXOO

Bern and Marge were cherished neighbors in Manhasset. We have wonderful memories of evenings on our front porch and at the club.

Bern was a business associate in publishing and fishing friend going back to 1976. He and Marge were wonderful to be around and we had many good laughs and enjoyed happy times. I have many fond memories of our chats while in the fishing boat in Canada.

My deepest sympathy to Marge and the family.
