Bernhard Walter KNOLLENBERG

KNOLLENBERG--Bernhard Walter. Business entrepreneur, born December 20, 1924 and raised in Manhattan, only child of Bernhard Knollenberg and Mary (Young McClennen) Knollenberg and grandson of George Herman and Agnes (Steen) Knollenberg and of Edward and Mary (Bigelow Young) McClennen. The deceased, known to most as Walt or Knollie, was a graduate of Millbrook School for Boys, Millbrook, NY, '42, and a graduate of Yale University, New Haven, CT, '45 with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. After completing Midshipmen's School in New York, NY and Naval Training School (Pre-Radar) at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, Ensign B. Walter Knollenberg served as LTJG until his honorable discharge from the U.S Naval Reserve. He was a graduate of Harvard Business School, Cambridge, MA, '50. Walter lived a private life and kept close ties with family. He lived in Old Lyme, CT and later in Killingworth, CT before retiring to Cape Cod, MA. His father, Bernhard Knollenberg, lawyer and partner at Lord Day and Lord, historian, author, Senior Deputy Administrator in the Lend-Lease Administration, was an influential person in his life, as was his grandfather, Edward Francis McClennen, lawyer and partner at Nutter McClennen and Fish. Walter is remembered by family, friends and professionals for his caring and personable demeanor. He is survived by his first wife, Pauline (Elaine Mutschler) Knollenberg, their three children, Peter Knollenberg, Mary Lee Fleischmann and Heidi Manice, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by family of his late wife, Ann. Remembrance prayers were offered by Walter's friend, Reverend David Deppen at an intimate private memorial gathering on the Cape, Saturday, December 19, 2009. B. Walter Knollenberg passed away on December 16, 2009, in Cape Cod, at the age of 84.
