CARL BENNETT Obituary

BENNETT--Carl. Carl Bennett, entrepreneur and philanthropist and founder of Caldor department store, died peacefully in his home in Greenwich, Connecticut on December 23, 2021 at the age of 101. He was the devoted husband of the late Dorothy (Becker) Bennett. Together, this dynamic team created a discount chain of department stores that spanned from the 1950's to the mid 1980's until he sold the company of 120 stores, all located in the northeast, to Associated Dry Goods. Born, January 27, 1920, in Greenwich, CT, to Mayer and Rebecca (Lipsky) Bennett. He was raised above his father's grocery store located on Steamboat Road, Bennett Grocers, with his two sisters and two brothers. Bennett credited his love of retailing from his father who encouraged him at an early age to be his own boss. He graduated from Greenwich High School and attended New York University. He served in WWII from 1942-1945 in the 466th Quartermaster Battalion. Upon returning home from his tour of duty, he became is wholesale liquor salesman for Connecticut Distributors in Norwalk, CT. Through family connections, he met Dorothy Becker, of Forest Hills, New York. They soon married. While they were shopping together at E.J. Korvettes Department Store, Carl realized his dream--to open his own discount store, combining his name with Dorothy's-Caldor. Carl had saved $8,000.00 from his military duty. Realizing he needed more money to open a store, his father suggested he go to Union Trust, a local Greenwich bank. There, he met Harold Rider, the president, who believed in Carl's vision in discount retailing and loaned him $50,000.00. The Bennett's opened their first store in 1951, in a walk up loft in Port Chester, NY. They soon expanded to Stamford, Norwalk and Riverside, Connecticut. "The customer is always right" and "Where shopping is always a pleasure" were his mantras for the company. In 1961, Caldor became publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange and he moved his company headquarters to Glover Ave. in Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1983, Caldor reached 1 billion dollars in sales. He received Israel's Prime Minister Award for distinguished service in 1973, and was awarded Discounter of the Year in 1982. Bennett was inducted into the Retailer Hall of Fame in 1983 along with Sam Walton, who was his good friend, and the founder and chairman of Wal-Mart. He and his wife Dorothy, were partners in the truest sense. They were dedicated to family and their shared commitment to their community, education, health, medical research and the State of Israel. They gave generously to Stamford Hospital (Bennett Cancer Center), Fairfield University (Bennett Center for Judaic Studies), Greenwich Hospital, Jewish Senior Services (formerly known as the Jewish Home for the Elderly), in Fairfield/Bridgeport, The Weitzmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel and Yeshiva University. Bennett is survived by his three children: Marc of Stamford, Robin (Joseph Kanarek) of Greenwich, Bruce (Jennifer) of Rochester, NY and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by Dorothy in 2008, his siblings Frank, Sarah (Potash), Esther (Brandwein) and Harry, and his grandson, David Kanarek. Anyone who knew Carl was aware of his famous quote for the last twenty years of his life, "enjoy life while you can." He was a wise man who inspired us with his resilience, passion, honesty, integrity and kindness. Funeral services will be private. Donations in his memory should be directed to the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, Bennett Center for Judaic Studies at Fairfield University, Jewish Senior Services (Bridgeport) or Greenwich Hospital.

Both my children worked part time jobs at the CT Post in Milford. One would take the school bus to work and the other would take the family car. That car now became the go home transportation for the first child. Where does one park a car in a large mall for another to take home? Easy. I told child # 2 to park the car in line with a letter of Caldor's in the rear parking lot. My son tossed the car keys to his sister one-night stating "the car is under the C". Horrified, her fellow employees said, "Under the sea?" She than explained their trick of parking the car for another's use. So, thank you Mr. Bennett for a great store, both inside and out.

My name is Davis Caplan. Had the honor of meeting Carl Bennett. As an architect performed most of the CALDOR work long time ago. That was reason that I moved to Connecticut because it was central to most jobs in northeast. Carl was very human, a real mensch as said in yiddish. I remember how he led by the example that he set. He respected everyone in his organization with no exception and that is part of why we all loved him. I hope to be with him someday at his new home in heaven.

Enjoyed a great friendship in the sixties with Carl´s son Marc. Carl and Dorothy participated enthusiastically, taking us around town to go bowling and ice skating. Attended the opening of the Framingham, MA Caldor store with Marc and his parents, who were both so gracious and positive minded. I´m honored to have known this wonderful family.

Dear Robin and family,
I'm sorry to hear of dad's passing. I remember meeting him and your mom and can tell you that the group of nurses you knew and worked with in the ER are all saddened about his passing, but grateful for all he did for the hospital. He was one of the most generous men on this earth and a real true gentleman!

We were saddened to learn of Carl´s passing. We admired his strong business acumen and retail insight. Carl and Dorothy were ahead of the retail trends that swept the nation in the 1969s, 1970s and 1980s when off- price retailing has now become the norm. We admire the legacy he has left behind, both in retail and in the healthcare field.
So many Westchester and Fairfield County residents have been the beneficiaries of the generous donations the family has made to both Greenwich and Stamford hospitals. We bumped into Robin, Joe and Carl while dining in Rye one summer evening a few years ago and I remember with fondness that pleasant encounter. We send heartfelt condolences to the family. May Carl´s memory be a blessing. Lots of love, Debbie and Michael Miron and family

Dear Family,
You don't know me, but I certainly know and loved Caldor's. It was my "go to" store for so many items. It was a sad day when Caldor's closed in Fairfield. I wish my mom was alive to share your dad's tribute with her. If possible, she loved Caldor more than me. Lili Walker/Fairfield

So very sorry to hear of Mr. Bennett's passing. He went to school with my late Aunt Alice. I, too, also have fond memories of Caldors growing up as I got my first TV there in 1964. I loved that store very much as we would shop at the one in Port Chester and would occasionally see Mr. Bennett from time to time. RIP Mr. Bennett and thank you for such good childhood memories. My condolences to the family.

My Mother and Mrs. Bennett were friends.

I grew up in Stamford. I worked a number of summers at The Caldor Headquarters in Norwalk. My brothers would go on to do the same. As I was applying to Medical School, I asked Mr. Bennett if he could be so kind as to write me a letter of recommendation. He did. He couldn't have been more gracious. He would go on to give me a copy of what he had written. It was lovely.

I really liked that letter. I have reason to believe that the people in The Admissions Office at The University of Connecticut School of Medicine must have liked it, too.

Over 45 years later, I still have a copy of that letter.

My condolences to Robin and to the rest of The Bennett Family. Mr. Bennett's graciousness will always be remembered.

Caldor was a "family thing" in my home. My mother worked in the Personnel Dept at Caldor for many, many years, my step father worked in the printing dept, I worked at the Fairfield store and my sister worked in the Derby store. I am happy to know that Mr Bennett lived such a long life. It was a great company to work for and my mother had many good things to say about him when she was employed. May he rest in peace and be joined with Mrs Bennett again.

My condolences to the family of this Icon. Their stores were a dream come true for a child of the sixties. His selection of model trains, Plastic models, and Tonka style trucks, and so much more in their toy department were unrivaled in Connecticut from my recollection. It truly was a pleasure save up money from cutting lawns each week and shop there. I still have some of those toys 55 years later. Thanks for the memories Carl and Dorothy.
