CARL HUTTON Obituary

HUTTON--Carl August, (C.A.), age 70, of Manhattan, passed away Sunday morning, December 13, 2020. Born and raised in West Grove, PA, C.A. was preceded in death by his brother, Sidney Hutton. C.A. received a B.A. in Drama from Washington College in 1972. He moved to New York City in 1974, earning his Equity card with the Queens, NY- based Gingerbread Players and Jack. Following years of tour and summer stock, C.A. was stage door manager for the Broadway productions of "Ain't Misbehavin' " and "Runaways." C.A. then worked in the Shubert Organization's ticketing department. In 1989 he joined the Settlement Housing Fund, an organization from which he retired in 2015. C.A. sang with the New York City Gay Men's Chorus from its 1980-81 inaugural season until 1986. In 1982, he began competitive swimming. At his first competition, the 1986 Gay Games II, C.A. bronzed in the 500-m freestyle, the first of a lifetime of medals. In 1990, C.A. co-founded Team New York Aquatics (TNYA), soon thereafter becoming a team coach. * In his fifties, he became an avid open-water swimmer, completing multiple fundraising swims. In 2014, C.A. joined several hundred swimmers crossing the Hellespont from Europe to Asia. He is survived by his husband, Jeffrey Fennelly and sisters Laura Zosia Hutton of Wilmington, DE, and Marina Hutton Conrad of Manhasset, NY. Following cremation, interment will be at Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Maryland. Memorial services will be held in New York City and Chestertown, MD, dates to be announced.

We knew C.A. from MHPH pool. He was a cheerleader and a friend for many people at the club. His wisdom and kindness will be greatly missed.

My uncle was the best guy in the universe. It makes so much sense to me that Broadway shut down the year he passed - those theaters are nothing without him!

He truly was the smartest Rolodex I ever met. He could tell you every detail of every family story he’d ever heard. He had so many friends, so many people who loved him, and I am so honored to call him my uncle.

CA was the epitome of New York, despite being from a small Pennsylvania town. He glittered, he shone, and he always stood tall - even in his last days. He may have only had one (real) eye, but he saw more than anyone I’ve ever met. I will miss him from the bottom of my heart so very much.

Thank you for the memories, Uncle Cow. Hunter and I will always remember you, until the lights shut down on Broadway, and even longer than that

It has been over a week now, and I am still at a loss for words. An intense friendship lasting more 40 years is a life defining endeavour. CA and I met that many years ago at the pool at Manhattan Plaza in NYC. He was a brilliant swimmer, full of determination and resolve to always be better, stronger, and more fluid than the day before. He gave me inspiration and activated my competitive spirit (just a little!).

A relationship such as ours provided a give and take, which in my opinion, is an essential element to any lasting friendship. He taught me about the theatre, the opera, classical music and I'd like to think I taught him something about art, photography and sport. But it is the life lessons and view of the world and the place we occupy in it that are the most memorable to me.

And I still cannot comprehend just how he knew just how many seats were to the left of the aisle in the mezzanine of the Winter Garden theatre! Or to the right, or in the balcony or in any other theatre on Broadway for that matter.

This is a guy who irrevocably changed my life and the way I look at things and for that he has my eternal gratitude. As my love for him continues to grow, he will be with me in memory for the remainder of my days.

Rest well my dear,
Richard

Carl was my first cousin, and my two brothers and I grew up only a few miles from Carl and his brother and sisters. He and I were just a year apart in age so became and stayed cousin-buddies. Our part of Pennsylvania was very rural in the 1950s and 1960s of our youth, and though Carl made the best of this, it was pretty clear by the age of 9 or 10 he was a city boy by nature. The adventures we shared were many, including a stint in the Boy Scouts (!) and running on the same ticket for president and vice president of our high school student council (Carl as president, of course). We lost, but our campaign was hilarious (too long to go into here). He was so full of life it is hard to imagine he no longer has life. The curtain came down far too early in his last act, always the most interesting act.

CA, sorely missed already, was a coach and founding member of TNYA, which is an all inclusive LGBT and allies aquatics team. He welcomed all to the team, younger and older, excellent swimmers and not so excellent swimmers. He was truly a unique and much loved member of our TNYA community.

C.a. was a shining light, and a wonderful actor, and had a great sense of humor at our Alma Mater, Washington College, and in his life beyond for many decades. He will be missed. RIP C.a. I know you're swimming and acting in Heaven.
