CARLETON ROSENBURGH Obituary

ROSENBURGH--Carleton F., of Reston, VA, on July 7, 2014, a senior journalism executive, died at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He had turned 75 on July 1. After graduating from Yale in 1961 and serving briefly in the Army, Carleton embarked on a life-long career in the production, circulation, distribution and business aspects of newspapers. He started at the New York Daily News in 1962, working in production, distribution and circulation of all of its publications. In 1978, he moved to Philadelphia, where he became Vice President of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. In 1986, he was hired by Gannett at which he became Senior Vice President of the Newspaper Division, responsible for all departments except editorial. A consummate and well-respected professional, Carleton served on the Board and in other capacities at the Audit Bureau of Circulation, a standard setting organization for the print journalism and advertising businesses. Although he excelled at business, what truly distinguished him was his ability to develop strong personal bonds and his mentorship of those around him. A fervent believer in "management by walking around," he cared deeply about the career development of those who worked for him. He will be missed by many. A citizen of generous spirit, Carleton served and raised money for his church, various schools, the United Way, and other causes. His retirement took him to Scottsdale, Arizona where he became active in Arizona Musicfest and was a Board Member of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, where he also taught, sharing his vast knowledge of and experience in the newspaper industry. Carleton was blessed to meet and marry Louise Ravenel Marshall, who was his loving wife and devoted friend for more than 50 years. Together they had three children who loved him dearly, Laura, Andrew and Cynthia. Their six grandchildren loved and will miss "Grandpa Zona". People wishing to send remembrances are encouraged to make a donation in his memory to Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 8991 Brook Road, McLean, VA 22102 or to Deerfield Academy, at 7 Boyden Lane, PO Box 87, Mailbox No. 305, Deerfield, MA 01342. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at the address above on Saturday, July 19 at 3:00pm.

I knew and respected Carleton through our work together on many industry committees especially ABC.He was a terrific professional. But what most endeared him to me was a personal touch: When he heard I had to have my colon removed he called to allay my apprehension by recounting his own similar experience. I had no idea as he was so active in every way.
Then during my recovery he called at least once a week for several months just to check on me and to continue to provide the kind of practical advice that you can only get from someone who's been there.I will never forget his thoughtfulness and kindness.
