MARIANI--Carlo Maria. Carlo Maria Mariani, 90, Rome-born artist best-known for his refined technique and Neo-Classical imagery, and widely regarded as a forerunner of Postmodernism in painting, died in New York on November 19. A central figure in Italy's avant-garde from the 1970s on, Mariani achieved an international reputation for arcane and often controversial paintings. He was the subject of many solo museum and gallery shows around the world; his works are in major public collections such as the Guggenheim, New York. He is survived by his wife Carol Lane Mariani.
