CAROL JOHN Obituary

JOHN--Carol Salin. Carol Salin John, 95, of San Francisco, California, passed away on January 17, 2026. A lifelong artist, she left behind a legacy of beautiful artwork and a family whom she loved. Carol graduated from Syracuse University with honors with a BFA in Art and from UC Berkeley with an MA in Art. She also attended the Parsons School of Design during her high school years. She exhibited her art in the San Francisco Bay Area at solo and juried shows and was best known for depicting scenes from the Bay Area, including wild mustard fields, Mount Diablo, and the Pacific shore. At UC Berkeley, Carol met fellow graduate student, physicist Walter John, Jr., who became her husband of 69 years and passed away in 2023. Carol is survived by her children Kenneth John (wife Kathy) of Arlington, VA, Leslie John (husband Greg Blackman) of Media, PA, Laura Ryle (husband Clint) of Cloverdale, CA, and Claudia Shearer of San Francisco; grandchildren Augie Blackman, Rachel Blackman, Rebecca Hoskins (husband Ward), Dean Shearer, and Elizabeth Shearer; and greatgrandchild Winslow Hoskins.

Carol was an important part of my early childhood. Summers on Lake Chargoggagoggman chauggagogchabunagungamaugg were filled with drawing and paper doll creating...making Art, posing in costume for Aunt Carol( an honor difficult for an 4 year old after the first 15 minutes). The distinctive aroma of oil paint drifting through our small cottage from "the studio"conjures vivid, beautiful, cobalt blue and viridian images even now.
I face my eightieth year, an Art teacher for almost 40 and a lifelong maker and lover of Art.
Thank you Aunt Carol.
