Kenneth Abramczyk. May 23,1946 – March 18, 2026
Ken was born in
Rome, New York; he attended public schools with his cousin Ray and best friend Don. He graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College and continued his education at Franklin Pierce College, New Hampshire.
Ken was drafted into the US Army. In active duty he served in Viet Nam and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. Later he joined the Army Reserves and retired as a Lt. Col. Ken was also a member of MOAA.
In 1972, Ken began working for Oneida County Department of Mental Health. While working he attended Syracuse University and earned a Master's in Social Work degree. Ken held various positions while working for Oneida County. In 2007, Ken retired as Commissioner of Mental Health and Director Of Office for the Aging. Ken remained active after retiring as a volunteer on the Community Services Board.
Ken was an avid runner for more than 50 years. He was so proud of finishing 40 Utica Boilermaker 15K Road Races as well as other runs in the Oneida County area. He also did 3 marathons. His running buddies became best and life long friends; Phil, Bob, Diane, Kathy, Nancy, Chris to name a few.
In 1991, Ken married Ann Cooney. They enjoyed 35 years of a loving relationship. They only time they were apart was when he was on duty for the Army Reserves. Ken and Ann enjoyed entertaining in their home in
Sauquoit, NY; along with riding bicycles, playing golf, gardening and updating their 1847 farmhouse. They had great vacations in New England, Hawaii and Germany. Ken was an active member of the Sauquoit Valley Optimist Club for many years.
After retirement, Ken and Ann started to vacation in Cape Coral, Florida. They eventually purchased a home in Del Tura Golf and Country Club. For 8 years, Ken loved playing golf in the winter months. His running transitioned to walking his beloved Golden Retriever, Josie. He and Josie were a daily feature at the dog park and on the streets of Del Tura. He was a volunteer for the Del Tura FISH organization.
Ken had a fantastic sense of humor. He was quick on the uptake in any conversation. It served him well throughout his entire life.
With Ann by his side, Ken fought a courageous battle against heart and kidney failure for last 2 years of his life.
Ken is survived by his wife, Ann Abramczyk; brother-in-law, Daniel Cooney; brother-in-law, Patrick Key. He also leaves several nieces and nephews and many cousins. Ken had so many friends including the Freytag family, the Sauquoit Valley neighbors, the Canadian Happy Hour group, his running crew, the golfers at Teugega and Del Tura County Clubs, neighbors the Del Tura community and his Friday morning golf group.
A special thank you to Dr. Chris Clark for his guidance during Ken's illness and to the Monroy, Cook, Fitzgibbons, Bagshaw and Allen families for helping Ann during this trying time.
He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Francis Abramczyk; his little brother, Joey Abramczyk and his canine family members; Princess, Meghan, Bambi, Lily, Daisy and Molly.
