CAROLEE KAMIN Obituary

KAMIN--Carolee Phyllis. Was a visionary and a co-founder, administrator and English teacher of Community School, an alternative high school in Great Neck, NY. Carolee shepherded generations through the challenges of adolescence, and beyond, maintaining profound friendships with many of her students long after she retired. Carolee was a brilliant teacher whose lessons extended far beyond the classroom. She inspired students to lead authentic, engaged lives and to exist in the present. She taught by example the importance of friendship, community, love, and life, and instilled the desire to learn in her students. Her legacy will live on in them. Carolee was born and grew up in Brooklyn. graduated from high school at 16 and Barnard at 20. She got her Ed.M. at Harvard before joining the faculty at Great Neck North High School. Carolee died peacefully on March 1, 2021. Retired, she maintained relationships with many of her former students, and had a large number of friendships from every stage of her life. Carolee loved NYC and took advantage of all the city has to offer. She knew every building, street, store, and especially, every restaurant. It was not unusual for her to be out every night - at dinner, theater, or a movie (pre- pandemic). Carolee was an avid and critical theater goer. She enjoyed opera, museums, and was a fan of art deco. Carolee was very politically aware and involved. The environment was a cause close to her heart. She loved animals, sunsets, the moon, and always had to have beautiful flowers in her home. Carolee was charming and had the unique ability to elicit the life story of a stranger in a matter of minutes. She described herself as a good interviewer. Maybe that's what made her such a great listener and generous friend. Long before it was popular or easy, Carolee maintained an incredibly healthy diet. Everything inside and out of her body was organic. She loved eating different types of cuisine and enjoyed sharing her favorite restaurants with friends. Carolee was a traveler, a night owl, a life-long learner. She was a sports fan, and enjoyed football, and tennis, in particular. She was brilliant, stunning, interesting, kind, stylish, funny, loving, health conscious, cultured, strong, fiercely independent, and a little quirky. She was intensely stubborn, fiercely loyal, deceptively strong, and capable of immense joy. Carolee is survived by her chosen family, including her 'daughter,' Michele Lipson, devoted cousins, and a slew of friends. She will be missed beyond words. Donations in her memory can be made to Earthjustice. There will be a Zoom Memorial on March 14 at 4pm ET: http://bit.ly/cpk314

I was a child, Carolee was much older. Our moms were fiercely close. The two kindest people on earth. It was the four of us. I wouldn't have it any other way. I cherish my memories and miss everyone so much. Carolee was the one with the flare for the dramatic. Always different, always one of a kind. A great person, a dear cousin. A part of her lives with me every day.

Carolee was one of the smartest and most honorable people I´ve ever known. I miss her very much.

Carolee was a wonderful teacher. She was quirky, caring, and fun. Things she taught me that I still remember: an ounce of specifics is worth a ton of generalities; satisfaction is a function of participation; writing should be simple, clear, direct, precise. I will always think back fondly on my time at Great Neck North, and Carolee was a very important part of my life during those formative years. My condolences go out to all who had the privilege to know her.

I’m deeply sorry. We just heard of her passing. Carolee was the officiate at our wedding on a beach in Maine. She was a no nonsense breathe of fresh air. If I was even half as amazing as she was I’d be doing well. Goodbye Carolee. Your brilliance will live on xxxxxx

I was a Social Studies faculty member at North Senior for 36 years and Carolee was there that entire time. I taught with her in Community School for at least half a dozen years so I know what a dynamic teacher she was and what a positive impact she had on her students - in so many cases for years after her students graduated. Her legacy as an individual and as a teacher is one to celebrate.

Carolee was my cousin. What good fortune to know her from the time I was born. Our mothers were very close sisters. We all loved each other very much. I sent her flowers every birthday, emailed and phoned regularly. That dimension is gone from my life now and I will miss her. Brilliant, quirky, different and always loving. I will never know anyone like her again. She is gone from my life but never from my heart.

She stands out in my mind in many ways. The one thing that she said multiple times which has been so true over all these years is "life works when you keep your agreements." What a force she was. Glad to know she had such a full life influencing so many of us along the way.

Carolee was my alternative school counterpart at North High School. She was a wonderful friend and a brilliant, caring woman. We maintained our friendship after we both retired. The world is far less glorious without Carolee walking amongst us. May her spirit continue to nurture and enrich anyone who stepped into her light. I love you, Carolee.

Carolee's love of education and her students helped create CS (Community School) and benefited so many of the iconoclasts, creatives, searchers and misfits that populated that special place. One fond memory was going to an alternative education conference at UMass in Amherst back in 77 that she chaperoned a bunch of to attend. I seem to recall, it was not meant for High Schoolers, but she expected and brought out the best of us - with supportive expectations like this. It was also I believe, the first time I was ever in a bar, and certainly the only time with a HS teacher! She wanted us to experience and see what campus life could/would be like (No... I didn't drink). I was petrified... and it remains one of my favorite memories of her. Some of us were also fond of hanging out in her corner of Room 7/CS. That was a risky thing to do... especially if you went near her chair :)
