CECILE BAZELON Obituary

BAZELON--Cecile Gray. Cecile Gray Bazelon died January 17 at 95 after a brief illness. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Cecile earned her BFA from Syracuse University and went on to a successful career as a painter, exhibiting widely in New York and throughout the country. She made a name for herself as a painter in a competitive and male-dominated art world and helped pave the way for other women. Primarily represented by the Robert Schoelkopf and Katherine Rich Perlow Galleries, she participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Smithsonian Design Museum. Her work resides in numerous collections internationally. Cecile was long married to Irwin (Buddy) Bazelon, a composer of contemporary classical music, whose works are "characterized by unpredictable syncopation, irregular groupings, unexpected triplets, and off-beat accents"--an apt description of the liveliness of the Bazelon's life together. Social, out-going, engaged and engaging, Cecile is survived by many cousins and even more friends who love her dearly.

I first encountered Cecile“s paintings before I met the artist herself. Her cityscapes, often unpopulated, are striking. She was a smart and talented artist and it could not have been easy to make a name for herself in the 1970s, 80s and 90s competitive and male-dominated art world. But she did and helped pave the way for other women following in her footsteps.
