CECILY SELBY Obituary

SELBY--Cecily C. Cecily C. Selby died on July 9, 2023 in Falmouth, Massachusetts, at age 96. She had a pathbreaking career as a researcher, educator, executive, corporate and not-for-profit Board member and enthusiastic supporter of science - and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born in London, England in February 1927, the only child of Catherine Smith and Keith Cannan. She leaves behind two sons Norman and Russell (and their wonderful wives Melissa and Frances), five grandchildren (Luke, Thomas, Katie, Ali and Christina, and their spouses), three great-grandsons (Andrew, Jackson and Jasper), and many friends and former colleagues who miss her enormously. She was predeceased by her son William, and her husbands Henry M. Selby and James S. Coles. Her family moved to New York in 1930 when her father was appointed a chemistry professor at NYU, and so began her 93 years in New York. Her family also started spending summers in Woods Hole where her father could continue his science research, and where Cecily fell in love with the local science community and life in the water and on boats. Cecily was a brilliant student, graduating from Radcliffe with a degree in physics at age 19, and from MIT with a PhD in biophysics at age 23. She returned to New York and began work at the new Sloan Kettering Institute where she did pioneering work on x-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. She married Henry (Hank) Selby, a physician at Memorial Hospital, in 1951, and quickly had three sons. Wanting more time to be a mother, she took a job teaching science at the Lenox School in Manhattan, and was within short order appointed headmistress, staying for 13 years. Norman, Bill and Russell all went to the Buckley School only a few blocks away, so it was a fun, close time together - and she had summers off for tennis and swimming in Westhampton Beach. After Lenox came a major step up and out: She became National Executive Director (CEO) of the Girl Scouts of the USA, an organization with over 5000 employees, thousands of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of girl members across the country. Girl Scouts increased Cecily's visibility, so soon came invitations to join the Corporate Boards of RCA, NBC and Avon Products, as the first and/or only woman on these Boards. She was also asked to join the MIT Corporation, which made her very proud. Cecily reoriented her life back to science education and policy after leaving Girl Scouts. She also was divorced from Hank, but soon met James (Spike) Coles, former President of Bowdoin College; they married in 1981. Spike was a scientist by training too, so in addition to living in Manhattan, they bought a house in Falmouth, bringing Cecily full circle with her youth. During this period she also joined the Boards of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), science-oriented organizations she loved. Cecily recently moved from New York into Heritage at Falmouth, an assisted living residence that took beautiful care of her. Cecily wrote a wonderful autobiography, Opening Science for All: A Continuing Quest, available at Amazon. There will be a memorial service on August 11, 2023 at Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole and a celebration of her life later in the fall in Manhattan. Please remember her lofty aspirations, and her faith in the best of humankind. Contributions in her honor may be made to WHOI and to the Cecily Selby lab at NYSCI.

I just saw Cecily Selby on an old 1972-1973 episode of To Tell The Truth which showed on t.v. on channel 2-4 BUZZR over the air in the early hours of Monday, June 9, 2025 in the South Bay of San Francisco. The four panelists were Bert Convey, Peggy Cass, Bill Cullen and Kitty Carlisle. That show has two imposters and the real person all say they were Cecily Selby, the National Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of America. The panelists asked questions and tried to figure out who was the real Cecily Selby. My daughter is current Girl Scout and we were trying to guess which one was the real Cecily Selby. I guessed the middle person was her just by looking at the three during the introduction because the real Cecily had such a neat pressed Girl Scout dress uniform on I guessed it must be her and I was correct. The first person was wearing pants and the third person had the same dress uniform as Cecily on but hers was wrinkled and didn´t fit as nicely so figured the real one would be wearing a nice neatly pressed dress. From this link below it was episode 1562 of the show. The other person on the show was Barry Berlin, a 15 year old jewelry designer although on the show I thought the boys were saying they were 17 years old.

Cecily had a good long life as I was surprised to find she recently she passed away in 2023 and was on To Tell The Truth 50 years ago before she passed away.

Back in 1972, I met Dr. Selby as a hopeful applicant at The Lenox School. We had a special meeting because while I was the type of student they wanted at Lenox with glowing reports from my teachers, my standardized test scores were pitiful and didn´t reflect the same student that I was. I had to assure her as she asked me to- that I would not be a failure at Lenox. She admired my interest in my school projects and also the way I modestly stood up for myself at age 13. She also told me how lucky I was to have a father who cared so much about me. She left Lenox to be the Director of the Girl Scouts of America, and so I didn´t see her again. I was true to my promise to her, and did very well at Lenox in all aspects. I never forgot her and our decisive moments at that meeting. And I remember her vividly still. I offer my deepest condolences to her family and close friends. Cecily Selby is unforgettable.
Sincerely yours,

Cecily was a "renaissance" woman, also sincerely friendly and with great curiosity for people and learning. She had a true warmth that was felt immediately.
On the occasion I met her in British Columbia, she´d travelled to my son´s wedding because she was related distantly to my ex husband and was well acquainted with the groom (my son) and the bride while they lived in New York.
We had a happy conversation as we shared teaching, family and oceanic science interests. Her work and life experiences were fascinating but her great charm was in being caring and interested in others´ lives that came so naturally to her.
She had only met me but extended a kind invitation to lunch at her place if I should ever be in New York. My great sympathy to her family who will be mourning her loss.

Cecily was nothing less than a giant, and a cherished friend and mentor to my late mom, Ellen Wahl z"l, who passed in December 2022. Both were fierce, lifelong advocates for women in science. We very much hope to attend the gathering in NY this Fall. May her memory be a blessing to all.
